  1. Off the top of my head the 29 has got to be a generic copy, right? It's not the Allentown, Church or Rockford, as far as I know.
  2. I haven't had time to think about what copies those might be, but I've been guessing that they're from the same source.
  3. Do individual collectors have that much leverage? CGC knows that the difference between a book in a CGC holder and another holder is bigger than this uncapped % of FMV. You can't go to the other guys unless you're using your wallet to make a point (which has happened, just not very often.) Also, if you're actually selling a book like this, the auction house should be taking care of getting the thing graded anyway. AND for a book\ like this they should 100% eat the grading fees if they know what's good for them.
  4. I'm not 100% sold that it will break the record, but... I think the pent up demand will be significant. I haven't checked, somehow, is this one of the upgrades or is this the old million dollar copy?
  5. This is a whole different story than Captain America and Wonder Woman's respective rises over the past 10 years. Spider-Man has always been one of Marvel's top characters and AF15 has been the top silver age book for decades. To be fair (and precise with regards to my previous statement), when I started collecting Amazing Fantasy 15 was only the third most valuable book behind Showcase #4 and Fantastic Four #1, and John Byrne's run on X-Men was the hottest thing in the world so I started from a very similar spot (although Spider-Man was still extremely popular even then.) So, I started from a very similar place. I did live through (as a comic shop employee) McFarlane's rise and Spider-Man #1, so I saw the beginning of the end for any other Silver Age being top dog, first hand. To your points- there are certainly other high grade Amazing Fantasy 15s out there. Are there a lot of 9.8s? I don't think so. Knowing Silver Age Marvels very well, I doubt there were many 9.8s of Amazing Fantasy 15 on the day it was released. The earlier you get with Silver Age Marvel the worse the quality of production is, as a rule. Is it possible a few 9.8s were out there and a few of those survived in perfect condition? Yes. We know that there are other early Marvel keys in 9.8 (including Amazing Spider-Man #1), so why not AF15? On the flip side, we also know that the highest graded Hulk #1 is only 9.4, so it's not a given that there's an endless reservoir of Marvel keys out there. I think the above is probably too nuanced, however. This is the best available copy of the best Silver Age book and it's been 10 years since a copy this good has been available. I think it'll go bonkers for just that.
  6. Do you really need the "hot character" quotes for Spider-Man? He's been the most popular character for the 40 years I've been in the hobby.
  7. I see it similarly. I think the AF15 is going to go absolutely crazy. ONLY TO BE TOPPED BY THE CHURCH DETECTIVE 27 (if it in fact goes up for sale) which, in my mind, will be the most appealing single book to come up for auction in the CGC era. I'm feeling faint. Both of these books could be driven up by the fact that there's a decade of dry powder waiting for a a 9.6 AF15 and a high grade Detective 27. That's the thing that makes a pure comparison across the three books tougher than it would be just based on what x,y, and z sold for last and their normal place in the hobby.
  8. I'm going to give it a think, but i think both the AF15 and the Church Detective #27 will set new records. The church book will be unpredictable but only on how high it goes. No one has had a chance to buy a book like this in many years. Action #1 has been in circulation in high grade.
  9. Thanks! At this point (with your anecdote and some other info) I'm satisfied that these are, in fact, the Church and Larson copies. So very cool.
  10. It's weird to me. The auction houses bend over backwards to get the biggest books. The mainstream press and the attention from the community are worth more than whatever they forgo in commission and the $$ they give up is WAY bigger than the difference in grading fees between the old cap and the new unlimited structure. I guess if you're the 880lb gorilla... It will be interesting to see if more $250,000+ books go the other way.
  11. That's fascinating, because that's the one book of his (his current Superman #1) that we know the least about since it's just a generic copy. Yet, it might be the third most valuable individual comic in the hobby.
  12. I think the AF15 is going to go bananas. The Church Tec might just go bananas as well. I think the Larson is going to be slightly more predictable since there are so many comparable sales now (although it will still be a huge sale)
  13. If these books are all coming up for auction it will be unlike anything we've ever seen. Individually, these would be a big deal, but together, they're staggering (plus all the other books we can see that were graded at the same time. ) It's just nuts.
  14. I didn't realize you'd made that change. OMG, so good. Can you imagine seeing all those books come in at once? Holy cow.
  15. Sorry if this was covered elsewhere, but I've been off the boards for a while (stinkin' life getting in the way of comics.) Anyway, as I posted on my blog this morning there are two new major books in the CGC census- both added on June 29th- a CGC 8.5 Detective 27 and a CGC 8.0 Action Comics #1. In addition to the easily verified census entries, I was told privately, that the Detective 27 is the Church copy and the Action #1 is the Larson copy. Can anyone verify? As often happens searching for both books just leads back to my own site, so that's useless to try to verify. Also, does anyone know if these books are in the same collection? It seems likely, but it could just be a coincidence. I'd love to verify that, as well.
