  1. (thumbs u :sorry:

As much as you dislike the way this situation was resolved, it was resolved in the best manner in which it could have ended.

The best course of action is to just avoid the sales threads altogether, and perhaps a public reminder of his past transgressions. This assumes he doesn't shape up.

Absolutely right. The PL must function the way it is set up to function. And when the aggrieved party accepts and announces it is all good, the guy has to be taken off.

Agreed. Despite the fact that the result is not what we would really want, one thing that this situation brought to light for me as an observer reading all this...when it comes to dealing with Symbiotic, I'll will think twice about giving this seller my cash. No matter how nice his books look (and I would love a high grade HFH #1). This has probably done the same for quite a few other prospective buyers.

So I would say the PL actually served its purpose.

  2. I caught this on HBO a couple of months ago and was pleasantly surprised. I honestly had low expectations as it basically seemed to me nothing more than what the poster showed, Robots v Godzillas. I thought the set design and the special effects were were done in that I believed that these robot things actually existed and walked amongst the cities.

A sequel would be fun. I am not looking for Oscar material here, just for some fun.

I had fun watching this. My expectations were exactly what this movie was...a modern day Godzilla-esque flick. Killer CG instead of a guy in a suit mashing up a miniature city playset. Would love to see a sequel...I hope they take it up a notch.

  3. The latest box office results:

X-Men: DoFP is catching up with The Wolverine's profit ratio, and should exceed it after this weekend once Thursday through Sunday is tallied. The tradeoff of domestic versus international box office results is the largest ever, with the domestic results being the lowest of the franchise though it has easily surpassed $200 MM.

Nick, great job with this useful info along with the updates. (thumbs u

    Thanks!

  4. This discussion deserves its own thread.

Absolutely! I think Gabe Jones (of Sgt Fury) was Marvel's equivalent to Jackie Johnson right?

Jackie Johnson (from Sgt. Rock in Our Army at War) was an ongoing perennial part of Easy Company. He first appeared WAY back in OAAW #113 (buddies with Wild Man who debuted in the same ish). Jackie didn't make regular appearances until somewhat later, but Kanigher was definitely on to something as far back as Dec. 1961.

It's the first 12¢ issue for cryin' out loud!

One could argue that a black character should be able to just interact with other characters as a regular part of the plot--not always as a plot device to advance some kind of examination of social issues. The very "normalcy" of the character's presence in and of itself would have helped readers recognize his humanity all the more.

Although Jackie's first appearance is interesting because it subtly avoids the obvious questions of Jackie's inclusion, Kanigher chose to write him in, subsequently in order to broach topics of racism, ignorance, stereotypes, respect, affirmation, etc. Kanigher, of course, chose to overlook the little factoid that African-Americans were still segregated during WW2 (a policy lifted for the first time during Korea where troops were integrated for the first time). . .and long-time Rock devotees like me certainly never quibbled.

A HUGE step in comics considering in the mid-50s, just the portrayal of a black astronaut was originally rejected by the Code Authority.

If you're curious about more of those stories, you can check out my (ahem) article about Jackie that appeared in the 1994 Chris Pedrin Big-5 War Comics Guide.

Where can I easily get a copy? Very interested in reading this, especially as a collector of early and key books of black characters in comics (mostly Bronze Age /"blaxplotation" period though).

  5. It has surpassed Thor: The Dark World's $644 million making it the 3rd highest grossing film in the ever growing Marvel Cinematic Universe after Iron Man 3 and The Avengers. The film has almost doubled Captain America: The First Avenger's worldwide gross which was the second lowest grossing MCU film after The Incredible Hulk.[/i]

I finally saw this today... Loved it! :acclaim: It certainly lived up to all the buzz Ive been hearing several weeks. Best Marvel flick Ive seen in awhile (Avengers, Cap I, Iron Man I, Thor I, and X-Men:First Class being among the last I've enjoyed).

Weird how Cap I goes from one of the lowest (despite thinking that it was one of MUs better films) to the highest grossing. Could a lot of people "been late to the show" when it came to Cap? Waited for DVD, Netflix or cable to catch on?

Regardless, (thumbs u to ScarJo and Mackie playing their supporting roles well. And Stan's (not Lee! :) ) portrayal of an unstoppable machine...The Winter Soldier.

  6. Ace Harlem was an early black hero in comic books.

Good catch! (thumbs u Ace Harlem was one of a few strips in All Negro Comics #1. Shouldve remembered that one. Most of those other characters in other features in that book that were the sterotypical caricatures I mentioned before (Lion Man, Sugarfoot, etc), but Ace was the exception.

ANC #1 lasted only one issue, Ace Harlem featured in just a few pages...

  7. would this 1965 issue of LOBO (who Ive never heard of though the plot sounds like the TV show BRANDED, the copy here is practically the theme song word for word.) be the first black comic book hero? Its a good 5 years before DC and Marvel began adding black characters.

Definitely the first African-American and first to headlined his own book, albeit short-lived (2 issues, I believe).

Golden Age had some silly caricatures of black people, except for one. A Black Panther-esque character, not costumed... more Prince of Wakada persona. He was the first star, but even he didnt have a self-titled series.

  8. You should have left it at...

From a different perspective, the edited removal was in good taste, as the original all too campy cover are filled with old fashioned 1970s sleazy elements, I prefer this one better, a power man logo in place of luke cage would be even more ideal...

This is where you got caught in the tornado and entered the land of Oz...

And this clean looking reprint beatsall the old beat up read issues hands down...

    :screwy:

  9. Yet another flawless transaction with Joey. Bought a hard-to-find DC key and Joey was not only easy to work with, but was responsive, professional, and shipped quickly and securely. One of my go-to dealers anywhere around. Thanks again!

Whatd you get buddy?! Curious... ;)

  10. I class FF # 67 as "1st appearance and origin of Adam Warlock, minor appearance on last page".

I class Thor # 165 as "1st full appearance of Adam Warlock".

I think that both issues have great merit and that the classification of either one shouldn't detract from the desirability of the other. Too much emphasis is put on "what is the true 1st appearance". There is room for more than one stage to the beginning of a character. 2c

  11. Love to hear the story. As for if you got it for a good price, I guess. It depends on if it really is a VG grade. if its in the top end of VG, bordering Fine...you got a steal.

If its on the lower end which Im assuming, then you probably paid a fair price. Maybe someone with more experience with Silver books of FF 52 can chime in.

  12. I know nothing about that book but very cool that you were able to get it from your cell while on the side of the road! :applause:

technology...i think we are bombarded with it at times and the market is oversaturated with handheld devices that we "need", but you've got to love it when its used for important things like...bidding on an auction that about to end and you wont make home to your PC (obsolete?) in time.

    :D

  13. crazy thing about finally obtaining this book (one of my grails). I knew the auction for this hard-to-find book was ending at about 7:50Pm. Unfortunately I was still on the highway headed home with my daughter and it was about 740.

So of course... I get off the next exit and pull over to bid on the auction through my cellphone! :D

Worth it... Never thought I would find this anytime soon. ^^
