The books that I paid CL for back in late March/early April arrived yesterday For some reason, it seemed like I had to keep 'pushing' them to ship my books. They arrived safe & sound, though. I guess that's the important thing. Lots of unnecessary stress, though.

In my case, this was the only book from the auction.  To capitalize on the shipping, I also ordered an Exchange book (FF 42, posted elsewhere), and I'm sure that's why they didn't ship until late May.  My March auction books (3) shipped immediately.

That was it. I was hooked. Fortuitous in my collecting, especially since I was largely confined to building my hobby in Las Cruces, NM (has Regional Scarcity in collecting ever been a topic on these boards?),

This is a good point, and no doubt impacted collecting pre-internet for those in the less-populated parts of the US.  While I had access to several LCS's by the time I was 14 or so, finding "old" books - i.e. early FF or ASM's - was rare, especially in quality, despite my telling the LCS's that's what I wanted.  Collectors in New York certainly never had that problem.  For some reason, I never took advantage of the mail order opportunities that were available.

  3. This is quite different from the subject of this thread, but it's funny in a way.  In ASM #45, the brilliant minds of the Marvel Bullpen decided to give kids a chance to ruin what could eventually be a $20,000 comic book by leaving a panel with blank word balloons and encouraging kids to write their own dialogue!  My God.  In any case, below is my copy of ASM 45 and my copy of Marvel Tales #33, which reprints the story.  I am sure I bought these at two different times and maybe even from two different LCS's, but nobody can convince me they weren't at one time owned by the same local kid.  In those days, it wouldn't have mattered a whit to me if there was writing in these books - I wouldn't have noticed before buying them.

Yeah I get that but a shot in the dark is like saying....IH181 will be 20k in "high grade"...."at some point down the line" or some non specifics along those lines. But with the information provided here

....you can't help to wonder. The only thing they got wrong was the timing by roughly a year. I mean it's weird...it almost feels like a gag!

Ancient Alien theorists suggest time travelers from the future are among us.  They're rarely proven wrong.  Perhaps the slightly off timing is an effort to throw off pursuit.

Seriously though, how did you know when that other thread started? Was it really you just guessing right? Just a shot in the dark?... or maybe something caught your attention triggering optimism?

It's mostly - but not entirely - a shot in the dark.  Predictions about the future are a dime a dozen and it's hard to imagine the ones that come to pass do so because someone actually foresaw something rather than just making a good guess based on observable conditions.  I just bought some newer stuff - which I have no interest in really - based on a thread on here where someone made a suggestion about how to determine what will be valuable in 20 or 30 years.  Complete wild asx guess on my part.

Sadly, it just happened to me again on another 9.4 of the same issue.  I tried to buy one off the ComicLink exchange ... submitted an offer, and it was declined; submitted another offer, and this time not only was it declined, but the book was also mysteriously taken down.

For all the good it will do, and without naming names, I just sent off an email to CL about the general trend of "can't find" consignment books.  In the long run, it's in their best interests that buyers have confidence in the system.

That kind of stuff gets you a proby/HOS designation around here.

Sad but true update:  It turns out I do NOT get to own this book after all.

I bought this book on the Heritage "marketplace" and was just told that the seller informed them they no longer have the book.  That's extremely disappointing and confirms my suspicion that much of that "inventory" is stale and not actively managed by the consignors.  But what really concerns me is the possibility that the owner may just be pretending they don't have the book because they think they can sell it for more in this market.  If I see this book suddenly pop up for sale somewhere, I'll know what happened.

    :sumo:

This "excuse" appears to be reaching epidemic proportions.

Cool, you're quite the continental chap! I think though you'd have to get them much earlier than 1938. They were both VERY well protected by brutal forces in 1938, each already being dictators of their respective countries.

This guy had no problem getting close to Hitler in 1938.
