I think this is significant enough to hold a space. Adam Strange had a significant SA run:

Mystery in Space 92 1st Space Ranger cover on title; Jack Schiff's team takes over Adam Strange

Not as good:

Tales of Suspense 92, 1st Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD crossover

Tales to Astonish 92, 1st Silver Surfer crossover outside FF

Not bad:

Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen 72, Elastic Lad joins Legion of Super-Heroes

Tough:

96

89. Superboy 89- 1st Mon-El

Screw Mon-El.

Where's Fing Fang Foom!? :sumo:

Down at the local tavern boasting to the guy on the next barstool, "I was a KING of the Silver Age, I tell ya. The nex' big thing -- if only them lousy superheroes hadn't'a shown up. I coulda been a contendah..."

(Yeah, I know, he has his own Wikipedia page. He fought the Justice League of America????)

All right, put on those x-ray specs, we're down to one last number. Somebody PLEASE go find a minor key for 96! (Sorry, a Kubert cover by itself doesn't trump a new Legion member)

Superboy #76, First Supermonkey, A BIG event...;):acclaim:

 Well, that debut may not have shaken the foundations of the DC universe, but........I offered it because GL/GA #76 got tossed and we seemed to be running out of possibilities for some of these numbers. DC is known for gorilla books, so I thought at least a monkey book would be good.

(And don't worry, my little feelings aren't hurt because someone laughed at my monkey book.)

What do you guys think is better:

Strange Tales 97- Aunt May Uncle Ben Prototype

or

Journey Into Mystery 97- 1st Tales Of Asgard

ST 97

I'd rather OWN a copy of ST 97, but JIM 97 (1st Tales of Asgard) to me is the more important key.

I mean when ST 97 was written back in 1962 was Stan actually writing this story as a prequel to AF 15 (Spiderman). I doubt it!!! It just fell into place that way.. I think Stan used them because they were around already and fit his Peter Parker tale like a glove!!!!

The JIM series lasted at least a couple of years, and even had it's own Title (O.K. Only a one-shot), but... still should be there.

I was also astonished to see how much DC & Marvel dominated this list. I was thinking a few more from the rest of the publishers would be here!!!!! But I couldn't think of any either that were more important than the Big Two!!!!

I would vote for JIM 97. ST 97 is a neat book but I think a lot of the Marvel prototype books are not really significant prototypes. They are good reading, though.

I agree. (I own low-grade copies of both -- somewhere.)

Stan used them because he was whipping off these kiddie tales as fast as he could, figuring no one would notice him recycling common names a couple of months later (maybe he wrote the stories at exactly the same time), much less 45 years later!

The JIM series lasted at least a couple of years, and even had its own Title (O.K. Only a one-shot), but... still should be there.

DC and Marvel dominated so strongly because they undeniably deserved the low-numbered keys, and almost no other publisher had series numbered in the 20-100 range during the Silver Age. Those that did (e.g., Archie) pretty much wrote the same story with the same characters over and over, so there were no keys. That's why there are so few Batman and Superman keys here too -- the series were already over #100.
