As far as mechanics, you'd probably do pretty well here as well...

*********************

If you say your body will be shot in 10 more years of doing this I suppose you're around 50? (Then again, my electrician is 73 and keeps on working, though he insists that I be around to help him with any heavy lifting as he no longer has an assistant because he's part-time)

Tough age to become an "employee" again, even if they want to hire you (and if you do get hired, how long before they want to move you out for a younger, cheaper, hire?)

I totally understand, you have your own business, something you will likely not be able to replicate elsewhere even if you sold it and bought one elsewhere. You've built up clients over the years and will be starting fresh elsewhere.

We go through this analysis all the time. I figure I can be a lawyer anywhere, though I may make 50-65% less than I make now. My wife is more tied to certain big city locales and she too would take a massive pay cut because her specialty is such a niche. What keeps us here in expensive New York is my wife's job, aside from it being highly unlikely she'd make anywhere near $100K elsewhere, in particular, as university faculty our kid(s) get free college tuition. Pretty nice perk. Too bad he isn't even 3 year and #2, #3, etc. don't exist, so that will be a long time coming! Also, if I ever start my own office she has great health insurance (I use my own through my employer because I only pay $40/mo).

OTOH, with the equity in our home (even in this market) we coud buy a really nice home elsewhere outright, no mortgage, and have a lot of money left over for retirement. It is VERY tempting.

When I was younger(under 30) I would have never considered moving from the area, during my 30s I would have considered it an interesting idea but unrealistic due to work, now my wife and I talk about the possibility of moving once the baby is out of HS(in only 4 years :o ). How times change.

Move to Florida, get a job grading for CGC. Okay, you will take a cut in pay and you'll live in AC all day. But hey you are Greek, so you will have one heck of a tan all year round!

Nik,

If you really want to move someplace where you will both be able to find jobs easily and make a lot of money = Ft. McMurray, Alberta, home to the Oilsands. You will both be raking in the dough (we have a shortage of mechanics and teachers up there), and while the cost of living is a bit high, it is probably better than where you are right now. Add in the fact that we have a top rated education system (Alberta students usually rank in the top 5 - 10 on international tests) and a free public healthcare system that works reasonably well (you would both get great benefit packages from your employers). :applause:

The only downside, of course, is that you would have to live there. lol

and in my field, all I have is about 10 years left in me as it will become physically impossible to continue.

Don't seel yourself short. Since Viagra, gay porn stars can last far longer than that.

I agree with most of the other people. I think your wife feels stressed or needs a change. If she is tired of her friends tell her to make new friends, work get a new job etc. How old is she....middle aged? I don't mean that in a bad or mean way just at mid age woman somethime (okay always) go through these sort of emotions.

If moving is only going to make you and your kids upset then what is the point in moving. Make her happy and everyone else unhappy seems a little pointless to me. I say take her out for a nice dinner and then to a small quiet coffeee shop and have a good long talk about it. See what you can do to change things where you currently live rather then make the move.
