I also aggressively bid on 2 of the PL books but didn’t get them. I’m just starting to collect romance comics and am looking to purchase my first Baker. Wow, Daniel. Welcome to romance collecting, brother. I saw you've got your eye out for some nice Savannahs, too. Hang in there, you'll get what you're looking for. Dr. Love
So - back around 2011 or so, Sparkle City got reanimated by Brian Schutzer. They came onto Ebay in an aggressive way, straight up slabs, nice stuff, no raw. In August 2012 they started including romance. We're talking sizable amounts for a Sunday night - 14 books one week, 16 books another. This was very unusual for romance. Slabbed romance in particular was kind of unheard of, certainly on Ebay. The last time there was sizable romance was years earlier, in the Sunday HA auctions when they were rolling out the Crippens. Even then 90%+ were raw. On 10/28/12, Sparkle had 45 slabbed romance go up. Never before, and never since, has there been so many slabbed romance books at one time in an auction. I had consigned some books to them, and unfortunately they made their debut that night. I got slaughtered on the prices. That was just too much inventory at one time for that market to absorb and maintain strength across the board. Their auctions continued featuring romance, but at a much lesser volume level - usually less than 10 books of various publishers. No big marquee books, just solid mid to upper grade offerings. Then, on 2/20/13, there was this posting in the Sales Advertising thread on the boards: szucchini and damonwad
comicnoir
Andy thanks for jogging my memory. What a feast and yes I won the TaT 1. I think I paid $1500.00 which was unheard of at the time for me or most ppl. Now just another walk in the park. Too bad they couldn't keep the momentum. Their auctions don't Sparkle as much. Popular Post Dr. Love
Here's what the Baker lineup looked like on Sunday night, 3/10/13. All of the regulars were chomping at the bit, at least 5 or 6 guys who are still around today. Also included were the die hard Ebay romance guys who never did make it to the boards, guys like slfan62, suganthi, uscheetah, and evan1665. I don't think many of the board guys were placing bids beforehand. Most of us were used to sniping with 3 seconds left, so it was Hail Mary time on many of these books. And what a collection it was. 18 primo Baker books. Slabbed Baker books. Absolutely unheard of, not this quantity, this quality. Here's the lineup, I still can't believe it all these years later: Cindrella Love #25 6.0 OWW Diary Secrets #10 8.0 OWW Diary Secrets #12 6.5 CR-OW Diary Secrets #13 9.2 W GCE #12 4.0 OWW Pictorial Romances #8 8.0 OWW Pictorial Romances #12 8.0 OWW Teen-Age Diary Secrets #4 8.0 W Teen-Age Romances #2 8.0 OWW Ohio Teen-Age Romances #19 7.0 OWW Teen-Age Romances #20 8.0 OW Teen-Age Romances #38 8.0 OWW Teen-Age Temptations #1 8.5 OWW Teen-Age Temptations #6 7.0 OWW Teen-Age Temptations #7 7.5 W Teen-Age Temptations #8 8.5 W Wartime Romances #4 6.5 OWW Wartime Romances #11 9.2 OWW When all was said and done, our boardies took 15 out of the 18 books that night. comicnoir
I started looking up the prices realized on GPA. They were there except for my Tat 1. Wonder why?

That is weird. You paid $1425, btw. Back then I kept track of what everyone was paying for all pricey romance - it was my hobby, it was my business. Right behind you with a $1400 bid was a guy with the handle fourthirds, name of Scott Henry Robson. He had money, and primarily went after first issues. Kind of like a contemporary Windy City ebay guy. But there were others right behind him as well; there was strong participation for your book, rightfully so! comicnoir

Wish I had had the resources to go after more.

I had been stalking the Boards for quite a while before the CGC Board update/revamp. I won a Flyin Jenny, GS12, TAR37, and TAR39 in 2013. Does not look like I won any of the books in that particular group, but I have won others from Sparkle City. Ricksneatstuff
