OT: Looking for employment advice

46 posts in this topic

As most of you know I work as a salesman for an office supply company. Currently things are going well with my job, careerwise and monetarily, but I feel unfullfilled with what I do. Have any of you ever been in this position?

What can those of you who have been in my situation recommend that I do? This is just a starting point for me and I haven't had much time to think things through, but there has to be more than just this.

Any suggestions would be helpful. :)

Dude, life is often like that...there seems to be something in people that makes them feel unsatisfied no matter how much we have. Human nature is such that it relatively always wants more. That's just my experience. Best advice you will get is to do something in a field you enjoy or feel good about. Other than that the world is wide open and you can choose to do whatever you want...especially if you don't have children or are not married yet.

you are way too happy

I'm actually quite a miserable person. I've been on both sides enought times to know that it is a rare person that is actually happy no matter what they have or are.

(shrug)

Edited to add that if you are passionate and good at what you do the money will follow.

James I say follow the money. I say this because, for my age bracket, I probably make as little as anyone on the boards, but I have enjoyed the HELL out of my life. Had I made better money I would have enjoyed myself even more and had less to worry about in the future.

Unless you are absolutely miserable, and know exactly what your perfect occupation is, the job that will make you feel the most fulfilled, then I say get paid...don't allow yourself to be miserable unto death or depression but GET PAID. :sumo:

Fulfilling jobs are rare....especially ones that pay well.Maybe you could start slow, take some night classes or join a club....maybe volunteer a bit.Sometimes unfulfillment is a sign of something else gnawing at you. One of the hardest things to do is a root cause analysis on your own mind. I would make sure I knew where I was coming from before I kicked a steady good paying job to the curb. I was a commercial artist for quite a while and the work was neat....but the pay sucked. Hard to stay fulfilled when you're broke.I work in a factory now and try to find fulfillment in my hobbies and co workers.GOD BLESS...

Pick on Dwight a little more, maybe encase his stapler in jell-o again or superglue his phone to the base unit (shrug)

To quote Lloyd Dobler from the movie - Say Anything

"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."

On a serious note, I would say that if you need fulfillment in your job, you should find something you are passionate about and do that or at least try to do it. You are still young and single which affords you the luxury of still being able to do or try just about anything you want. Money is important, but it isn't everything (speaking from a poor persons perspective, of course).

All great advice so far. I even got a few laughs out of everything. I actually found something I am passionate about and start fight training in August at an MMA club/gym. Now don't misunderstand me, I am not going to do this professionally. :insane: But I have been thinking about getting into the health field, such as going to night school to become a nutritionist, and then possibly branching out to be a dietician for fighters. Just a thought.

Do what you love to do. Thats my advice.

Life is too short to do anything less than what gives you fulfillment. That doesnt mean you have to change careers but if you can incorporate what you love into making a living than your way ahead of most folks.

So damn true. The more you make the more you spend, etc. Its a viscious cycle.

Being single and no kids is a huge advantage for taking chances.

My grandfather said it best, "easiest thing in the world is to make money, hardest thing is holding on to it"

I hope this doesn't turn out like a co-worker of mine who tried his hand at professional poker.

marry a stripper, you will worry less about your job. Your private detective bill will go up but you will worry less about your job.
