Steve Ditko...

Yeah, he hangs out with the Royal Court of Darkness but, he isn't a part of it..yet...I heard one time the Devil told Ditko that there was nothing he couldn't get..Ditko asked him for one crazy impossible thing..the Devil paused..paced..thought about it..and said..yes, I can get it, for your soul. As Ditko agreed, the Devil brought out the contract, when it was time to sign, Ditko said...

"Even You!! Stop Hounding me! No Autographs, No exceptions!" .. Dtiko did not get what he asked for...he had walked away..

Ditko and Kirby...Kirby and Ditko...my two favorite comic artists of all time! :headbang:

This one's pretty good as well...

When Strange and Stranger came out, there were a few threads here...and there were several negative reviews of the book...a couple of them I read the reviewers were like really pizzed off this guy even made the book...here's one link...

http://www.comicmix.com/news/2008/07/15/review-strange-and-stranger-the-world-of-steve-ditko/

But for any Ditko fan this book is a must-have...lots of history and great artwork as well as insight into his style...I'm sure there are factual errors as there always seem to be in books of this nature but still very worthwhile!

This one features some artwork from the book...

And lastly...this one's about some guy's real encounter with Stevey...pretty funny...

Charlton after the code came in, later revived the title, This Magazine Is Haunted. Ditko did three more covers for them.

Man, After looking at some of those covers I guess I like the discussion and legend of Ditko more than a lot of his work... :tonofbricks:

I would like to ask the "historians" of the board if they think Steve Ditkos body of work would still be held in the same regard today if he hadn't worked on spidey and become so "unavailable" to the fans????????

Hey Tony, those early Charltons covers are just fantastic! How is the interior art? With the Charltons, there are a lot of sub-par Ditko interiors, but every once in a while, a true gem pops out.

thanks,

Bill

I've often pondered the same question, but I always come back to this: Ditko conveys raw emotion. Kirby conveys raw power. While a lot of the covers shown here are not the high quality of say a Wally Wood, they have their own unique feel and when one looks at them, it's pretty obvious they are by the same artist.

While I may not have heard of Ditko without Spidey until much later in life, I would have definitely become a fan when I did learn of him.....

All I can say is WOW! When you think about all the Charlton, pre-code, pre-superhero sci-fi, monster, you name it even before Spidey hit the scene...plus as previously mentioned Steve was a story-writer as well...the dude was just PROLIFIC man! Many of these covers I have never seen before...appreciate everyone's postings! :headbang:

As a dabbling artist myself, how Steve (and Jack I gotta include) cranked all this work out over all the years is just unf*@&ingbelieveable! :insane:

To me he was the man.Better than Kirby or any marvel artist.Just read strange Tales 97 the other day.Simply awesome. His artwork may be a bit simple to some but it sure makes me smile.

His early stories were generally quite good -- not as polished as his later work but told with a great deal of youthful energy.

I no longer have my Ditko Spidey's and am just as thrilled to own his 1950s work -- it's distinctive and compelling amongst his contemporaries at that time.
