Infinite Marvel Picture Frame books

Another update from the Department of Useless Information:

Not many changes in the census over the last 6 months. I think just two or three really tough-to find books have been slabbed since I last checked. Somebody slabbed a Li'l Kids #4 in 9.4. And a 9.2 Li'l Pals #2 made its way to Sarasota as well.

There are still 14 Picture Frames without a single 9.4 or better copy. And 5 without a single 9.0 or better. Millie the Model is still playing very hard to get.

There are now 10 9.6 copies of Avengers #103, so while it's still one of the toughest hero books in 9.6, it's not so impossible anymore.

So now, all the information nobody has been waiting for:

Of the 388 Picture Frame books, there are:

And for Thomas (djpinkpanther67) and folks who just chase the 25¢ books:

Still no 9.4 or better copy of Special Marvel Edition #4. Marvel's Greatest Comics #34 and My Love #14 each have only 1 copy in 9.4.

Still no copies of Marvel Tales #33 or Mighty Marvel #16 in 9.6 or better.

Still no 9.8 copy of Marvel Spotlight #2 or Sub-Mariner #43.

There's only 1 9.8 copy of Avengers #93 and I would trade my left kidney for it.

There's only 1 9.8 copy of Incredible Hulk #145. And I believe it's owned by a legendary contributor to this thread.

Hulk Annual #4, Daredevil Annual #3, and Sub-Mariner #43 are the toughest hero books that aren't from a reprint title.

Avengers #103 (I'd be happy with a nice affordable 9.4) is still at the top of my list. Thanks for the great info Ghost Town!

Oh, and I own a CGC 9.8 Incredible Hulk #158, but it's a purple label (small color touch) so I guess it doesn't count...:sorry:

Thanks as always for the great compilation of the census data, Barton.  I'm really surprised to learn about Marvel Spotlight #2.  I see this book being offered for sale all the time in 9.4 condition, and note that there are over 100 census copies graded 9.4 or 9.2 (second only to ASM #102 in abundance, and a greater number than any other superhero ish).  You'd think a couple of copies would have measured up to 9.8, given that the huge number of undercopies suggests there may have been a warehouse find or unopened distributor box of this issue.

I wonder if this book always suffering from staple punctures is the reason many are in 9.4 but not higher grade. I see lot of great copies that look sweet in every way, but the area around the staples is susupect. Saw a beautiful 9.6 at ECCC and it had two slight staple punctures and that was about it.

I for one , really enjoy pouring over so called useless CGC census data

Thank you for the time and effort Ghost Town.  (thumbsu

Almost makes me wonder if any of these books would hit into the 5 figures if found in 9.8 condition and made available in the marketplace, similar to what happened with the Iron Man 30 which apparently sold for $15K in one of the recent CC auctions.  hm

Unless the buyer of the Iron Man #30 also really wants a 9.8 Iron Man #44, I can't imagine any of the books in that list fetching $10K in the near feature. The 9.8 X-Men #79 realized $4211 in 2013 and the 9.8 DD #86 sold for $986 in 2012. The 9.6 X-Men #79s have sold for around $3400 and $2400

There are some highly sought after books in the list, but no keys. And I guess anything is possible because it just takes one aggressive buyer to pay a crazy price for any given book. But I wouldn't hold my breath for any five figure sales from that list.

Definitely with you on your last point there.  (thumbsu

I actually can't figure out how it's possible for 2 extremely aggressive bidders to go that far out as to have the an otherwise common BA book hit $15K in the first place, even though it is the single highest graded copy FOR NOW:screwy:

But then, to each their own, I guess.

I think this is the first Picture Frame I've picked up in 2017. It's the third 9.4 copy I've owned of the same book. Each time, the centering has improved a bit. I'm either dedicated or kind of crazy, probably both. Still no 9.6 in the census.

For one thing, 'FOR NOW' actually means for the first time in the 18 year history of third party grading.  If you think a 9.8 copy of one of these books is going to emerge any day now after being sought after but never found for that long, you may on a rare occasion be proven right, but the odds are stacked very heavily against you.

For another, there is a small but dedicated number of high grade picture frame Marvel collectors willing to pay what it takes to acquire especially nice looking copies that combine insanely high structural grade with beautiful paper preservation and exceptional cover registration.  I know I'd be willing to pay a price that I suppose would seem insane to you for a well-registered 9.8 copy of Avengers #93, basically because it's scarce as hen's teeth (one has shown up in 18 years of encapsulation, and who knows if the quality of production on it is good or bad) and, to me, it happens to be just about the coolest comic book ever published.

Just because these books were printed a few years after Silver Age comics (they're 'only' 45 years old, instead of 50-55 years old), they're no less desirable to those that love collecting them.  Even if you're not one of us.

I can see a well-centered 9.8 copy of Avengers #93 selling for five figures. I even offered my left kidney for one a few posts back.

Shameless plug here folks. My Supernatural Thrillers #1 is closing tonight on Comic Connect. Extremely hard to find picture frame in 9.8. Still a steal at its current price.
