The WWI-style helmets were in fact the very early WWII helmets used by the U.S. armed services at the outbreak of the war, when the United States had not yet mobilized. Because the cover was probably drawn sometime in December 1941 to very early 1942, C.C. Beck would have been using photographs of the very first WWII U.S. soldiers donning those helmets.
