Tales to Astonish #27 in 9.4 fetches $75,000 on Pedigree Comics!!

11 posts in this topic

According to Doug Schmell, CEO and President of Pedigree Comics, Inc., his company has brokered the sale of the world's finest existing and top certified copy of Tales to Astonish #27, a gorgeous 9.4 (Near-Mint) with off-white to white pages for a record price of $75,000. The issue, famous for the first appearance of Ant-Man, is widely considered the toughest of all the Silver Age Marvel keys to obtain in high grade. Only 2 9.4 copies are known to exist, with only one in 9.2 and 3 in 9.0. Only Incredible Hulk #1 is close to Tales to Astonish #27 in terms of scarcity of high grade copies (1 in 9.4, 4 in 9.2 and 8 9 in 9.0) but due to its chocolate brown and black front cover and borders that easily show stress lines, color flecks, creases and surface impressions and its very low print run (only 139,167 copies were circulated) , TTA #27 is easily the hardest early 1960's Marvel key to find in high grade. In CGC certified 9.4, it is almost impossible to locate.

Schmell states: "The consignor of the Tales to Astonish 27 contacted me after he had heard that the lone 9.2 copy recently sold on my site for $32,500 (in September, 2009 and as reported in Scoop on Thursday, September 17, 2009). He didn't want to list the book on my site or put it in my upcoming auction as he just wanted the transaction to be private without any hassles or waiting, etc. I had contacted one of my buyers who only collects ultra high grade Marvel keys and the price of $75,000 was agreed upon after some negotiations. The book is in incredible condition and has beautiful pages and cover gloss. The spine is perfect (unheard of on this comic) and it only has tiny color flecks at the top right edge and front corner keeping it from being a 9.6. It is undoubtedly the best known example of this great issue and was the very first one to receive the coveted 9.4 grade from the experts at the CGC. Both buyer and seller are ecstatic over the sale".

If you collect high grade Silver Age Marvels (and DC's), you owe it to yourself to check out Pedigree Comics' upcoming Grand Auction, which starts in only 10 days on January 18th and will run through the evening of January 28th, 2010. There are some incredible high grade books in the auction, including the White Mountain copy of Fantastic Four #1 in 9.2; a Fantastic Four #1 in 8.5; the highest graded copy of Daredevil #1 (in CGC certified 9.6); a 9.0 example of Amazing Spider-Man #1 plus some killer early X-Men (#1 in 9.2 and issues 2-4 in 9.4). There will be well over 300 high grade Marvels and DC's to buy including some early Atoms, Aquamans and Metal Men from the Pacific Coast Collection plus an amazing group of early 1960's books from the Mound City Collection. Please check Scoop in the following weeks for all the latest news on the Grand Auction. You can now view over 200 of the auction items by going to the Pedigree Comics Web site (www.PedigreeComics.com), clicking on the "Grand Auctions" banner and then clicking on the "Auction Listings" menu at the top.

Pedigree is still accepting consignments for the January Grand Auction and will be adding additional, last-minute books up until Sunday, January 17th and even after the auction commences (through Sunday night, January 24th). They will also be emailing a newsletter to all their customers right before the auction starts to announce any new, last-minute entries. Please contact them at (561) 422-1120 or (561) 596-9111 or email at DougSchmell@pedigreecomics.com if you have any questions, comments or information about the consigning process. Remember, the higher the value of your book(s) that sell in the auction the more $$ you take home under Pedigree's Climbing Scale. Pedigree consistently sets new sales records for Silver and Bronze Age comics in each Grand Auction. Why settle for less by consigning with someone else?

Prospective consignors can also upload their own scans, item information, descriptions and reserve amounts for the Grand Auction by utilizing the Automated Consignment System. It is actually very easy and fun to do. Just register onto the site, click "Customer Page" under "Your Account" and then click "Consignments" (under "Auctions"). You will then be able to enter the Pedigree Comics Consignment Management System and upload your own CGC certified books and magazines. Pedigree Comics will receive an email automatically once you have uploaded the information and they will then review the information imparted for accuracy. The item(s) will then be added to the January Grand Auction to be bid on. You will be amazed how simple it is to utilize the Automated Consignment System.

Comicparadox likes the way Doug Schmell, CEO and President of Pedigree Comics, Inc refers to himself in the third person. Comicparadox shall make mental note of this self-aggrandizing strategy. Perhaps it will help him if he ever chooses to have a sales thread again. Comicparadox would also like to congratulate Captain Tripps on this excellent sales notice. TTA 27 in NM is amazing.

Thanks, Tim. Kind of psyched/excited to see how the FF 1 does myself as it's hard to guage its value. There really have been no sales of that book in this nice of grade forever it seems.

Hope all is well, buddy.

Doug

You should`ve provided us with a benchmark by selling your 9.6 copy in an auction instead of directly to Tom! :baiting:
