What are your comic-collecting goals?

85 posts in this topic

Anyone else have dreams of finding some sort of estate sale or yard sale and digging up an Action #1?? That would be crazy cool!!! I would hate it if i didn't have any cash on me and they refused to hold it for me while I ran to the ATM!! haha that would be one nerve racking drive back!

Context:

I collect Marvel from late 1958 (with the return of Kirby, Ditko and Heck) to Jan./Feb. 1966 (the last of the original Ditko-designed colophons), including the teen titles, war and westerns.

By my count, this is 954 books, of which I have 130 (refined after six years back in the hobby). I hold out for books between 7.0 to 8.5, but am always happy to settle for a really good 6.0. I don't want to worry about hurting a book by reading it but, at the same time, I want it to look way it might have looked after a couple of years in a nice collection from 1965.

Goals:

I would really like to assemble a complete newsstand month for Marvel. I am closest with September 1965 (Nov./Dec. cover dates) 8 out of 13. Of the five left, only Modeling with Millie 43 might prove somewhat elusive in grade.

I am also interested in putting togther a run of all Marvel titles for the last six months of 1965 (cover dates).

This might be a somewhat unusual way to collect (broad and inclusive) but I am always very interested in the history of comics and in trying to recapture the nostalgia and magic of this particular period. When I started collecting for the first time in 1970, books of this period were the most exotic books to find. Without comic book stores or the Internet, such books were only the product of second-hand cigar stores and the older brothers of friends.

For me it's complete runs of every Spider-man title. My progress has been well documented over on the CPG boards.

I do have some caveats and restrictions.. :blahblah:

I don't care about variants, one-shots, and mini or maxi series. (I have a long box full of them, AKA 90's )

I do want all the Annuals, Giant size and Specials

The series has to have lasted a year, with the possible exception of a volume 2,3 etc... of something

Current status/needs including completed series.

DUDE,where do you put all of your books? :o

My collection is actually really a PITA to manage. Currently I'm at around 36 long boxes and 2 short ones (plus around 10 slabs). Probably around +/-8500 books. (shrug) Luckily we have a spare bedroom/office and I have shelving that holds everything. I am just about out of room at this point.

I'm constantly re-working my boxes as I buy new comics. (Buy, read, new bag and board, log them on CPG and then box em'.) One box will get too full and I have to rework the next two+. In the past three years I have put backing boards on 100% of my collection and have recently made the commitment to go full mylar. I figure that will take a good year plus to transition as I'm only about 10 -15 % complete there. I'm probably about a month or two behind on my maintenance.

In 2007, my goal was to get every comic from the Big Five. Not sure what that means? DC had 5 major war titles; All American Men Of War, G. I. Combat, Our Army At War, Our Fighting Forces, and Star Spangled War Stories. I achieved that goal and had assembled every comic from every one of those titles, approximately 1200 issues. In 2008, I noticed how close I was to a 2nd set, maybe 250 away. I set a goal to complete it that year and I achieved that goal a little late, just into the year 2009.

I have since started to sell my 2nd set off bit by bit. But at the moment, I still have my first set intact. Will I break that one up? Oh probably someday....

My current goals? I haven't really set one yet. I am trying to get one of every version that they've made of the Big Five. For example, newsstand editions, direct editions, Mark Jewelers inserts, Whitman variants, Canadian price variants, etc. That keeps me pretty busy.

Couple goals:

1) ASM 1-400, I have 200 issues. Probably start with 200-400 first, missing about 60 books there.

2) Depending on how much taxes has to offer me this year, I'd like to pick up either a graded or raw: ASM 101, 238, 300. Long term: AF15, ASM 1 or ASM 129.

3) Get a few issues of Sin City I'm missing.

4) Attend a comicon. Haven't been to one in 15 years.

5) I already have several sketches and autographs, would like to get some OA.

6) Finally get something slabbed. Currently dont have any cgc books.

7) Finish my xo manowar run
