Is ARCHIE #1 the new ACTION #1?

A high grade copy of Archie Comics #1 went for $167,300 at Heritage Auctions last week, setting a record that turned the heads of even dedicated collectors. It's not often that non-superhero comics climb into this rarefied air, but the market on this one's been building for a couple of years -- much note has been made of the rarity on the current marketplace of nice copies of early Archie compared to Marvel/DC books of this era, and of course modern-day Archie has been reclaiming mainstream attention with recent storylines.

Love the book but would Pep 22 not be the more appropriate comparison. Even so, I think Action 1 is in rarified company which would not include Pep 22 IMHO. Superman seems to be a much more of a cultural icon than Archie and the gang. Notwithstanding the foregoing, would chase Peps and early Archies.

As others have stated...no.

But, as time goes on and these GA Archie's are harder to find and as Archie becomes even more part of Americana...old Pep's and Archie comics are going up in value.

Plus there are so few CGC examples of GA Peps and Archie's....when you find one in higher grades...they bring a premium.

Archie 1 cgc 8.5 = 167,000

Action 1 cgc 8.5 = 1.5 million

so I would say yes, they are the same, and Archie 1 has become the new Action 1, with the only differences being desirability, their historical importance and price.

Jon Goldwater is taking his shot at making it so:

"Our stated theme and goal here is playing in the exact same sandbox that Marvel and DC currently occupy," Goldwater said. "They have all the revenue streams going, not just in publishing, but they have tons of licensing revenues, they have films, they have animation. They have all those things that we are now in the process of teeing up for Archie Comics."

Which means serious competition for "the Big Two" - and a lot of fun for us.

Since Archie #1 is only the beginning of Archie`s own title rather than his first appearance, wouldn`t the correct question be whether Archie #1 is the new Superman #1 rather than the new Action #1?
