What would I be had I not played D&D and found Conan in 1979?

I shudder at the thought.

You want to know what's really funny?

My Dad thought AD&D was a 'bad influence' on me and bought my first comic for me back in 1980 (ASM 200) in an effort to get me interested in something else and away from D&D.

About ten years later I asked him if he realized that instead of weening me off of D&D, he started me on a several thousand dollar a year habit that now takes up an entire room of my house.

He just shook his head and said that as a parent, some decisions work out better than others. Of course, I think his decision was perfect!

Oh my God, what hath I create through this electronic thread? doh!

Some killer Shiverbones original art, for one.

Thanks for posting the shots of the minis. I have some of those. We had the wizard head coming out of the vat and the big hulking demon (that's unpainted in your tray). The painted wizard w/long mustache that you have by the demon is a guy who went on a ton of adventures with us... years of adventures as multiple long-lived characters.

Fun to see the basic set yellow dice again--mine got very round very fast and were discarded. I still have the blue ones that came with the expert set though.

What a great thread. If you guys are inspired, you can probably spend hours reading this old school blog: http://www.grognardia.blogspot.com/

I've been reading it like crazy over the past week. I decided a few weeks ago to dust off the books and run an adventure or two for a friend that's moving away. Really fun to think about this stuff again. I've been rereading the Temple of Elemental Evil lately.

That letter from TSR is the coolest, thanks for posting. I have an envelope somewhere from Dragon with a contract signed by Roger Moore for a short article of mine that they published in the summer of 1990.

Cool! What did you write for Dragon? I have about 5 copies of the mag left from the early 80's, but never really read it past 1986 or so.

In college in summer of 1989 I was already nostalgic for old D&D so I wrote an article about using old modules, calling it The Classics Campaign. They printed it a year later.

I just discovered a TSR release timeline and looking at it I found that certain modules and other releases were just a touch earlier than I remembered, so it turns out that even though I had an avid group through high school, I had mostly stopped buying modules. My players really preferred castle storming with some politics by that point. The last few Gygax modules (ToEE excepted) were disappointing--Dungeonland, Mordenkainen's, and Isle of the Ape were very bleh. Thanks to all the Unearthed Arcana bonuses and stuff my players wiped out the giganto ape in a few rounds. Just a joke.

I've never played D&D, but I was an avid fan of other games.

Here in Spain, D&D was realy expensive for a kid to start on. Too many books, really expensive, really hardcore fandom (and difficult to start with)...

I played Paranoia, Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars RPG, ansd I loved some Chaosium books like Call of Cthulhu, Stormbringer and specially RuneQuest. I was a hardcore fan of that one.

We played every weekend and a lot on holidays. We knew that couldn't last (other activities, girls or whatever) and in our last year together (before going different colleges) we made the biggest campaing we could imagine, to close it big time. It took us almost all the last 8 months and It was amazing!. If you want to measure it... think on all the DC Crossovers rolled into big one! lol

Sometimes I miss those days... everytime I watch E.T and see the kids playing in the kitchen at the start... I remember those wonderful days of youth.

OK - I TOO went to my garage.. and have found the motherload..

uploads commencing

I remember needing a place to store my dice in about 1982 or so.. and drew inspiration from how my mom stored leftovers - you guessed it - Tupperware!

Just found my box of die

Photobucket

There is something about seeing this that just fills my heart with excitement haha

I initially kept mine in a metal Band aid box (remember those) and graduated later in my teens to the purple Crown Royal Bag. . .
