I was pretty disappointed with the 171 when I received it (ebay purchase). The picture on the ebay listing was a somewhat blurry picture of the top half of the book/slab. I thought purchasing CGC books would be safer than purchasing "ebay NM" books. Looks like this is not the case.

I've never submitted any books to CGC... I've just purchased a few already slabbed. Can I call for the grader's notes if I was not the person who submitted the comic?

 

I've always been pleased with the appearance of the FF149. It really does look better in-hand because the large scan really accentuates the defects. Since FF149 was the first comic I purchased as a kid, I've always wanted to own a high grade copy (I read my original copy until the cover had just about fallen off). After the experience with the FF171, I'm a little leary about trying to upgrade my 8.5. If I got a 9.4 of the FF149 that looked like the FF171, I'd be really frustrated. 9.6s and 9.8s are out of my price range.

I've always wondered that about the notes, too - I have submitted books but always through a comic book store, not actually myself.

wow on the 171!!!! must been graded at the end of the day on friday! another example of why they say buy the book, not the grade.

I don't like the back cover of the 149. Looks like dirt or staining. That should explain the low grade.

Sorry to resurrect an old post. I called for the grader's notes on these two books. Is it appropriate for me to post them here, or is that taboo?
