The LOS ANGELES COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION celebrates it's 35th Anniversary during 2012, and the first show of the year takes place on SUNDAY, JANUARY 15, 2012.

Special Guests signing autographs will be RON ELY (Doc Savage in the 1975 Movie, Tarzan in the 1966 NBC-TV Series, and the future Superman in The Adventures of Superboy TV Series); YANCY BUTLER (Witchblade and Mann and Machine TV Series, John Woo's Hard Target); Cast of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY (1988-1992 TV Series): JOHN HAYMES NEWTON (1st season Superboy/Clark Kent), JAMES CALVERT (TJ White), TRACY ROBERTS (Darla), and Ilya Salkind (Producer); REX SMITH (Daredevil in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk TV Movie, Jesse Mach in Street Hawk TV series), ROBERT DIX (Crewman Grey in the 1956 classic Forbidden Planet). More guests and give-aways to be announced.

Admission is only $8.00, five years and under are free. Early Admission Price to be announced soon. The Convention is located at the Shrine Auditorium Expo Center, 700 West 32nd Street, across the street from USC College. Show Hours are 10:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M. Early Admission 9:10 A.M. Dealer Tables are only $105.00 for an 8ft.x3ft. when paid in advance.

The LOS ANGELES COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION has a long history serving the collecting community, featuring Comic Book greats such as Jack Kirby, Bob Kane, Jerry Siegel, Don Heck, Stan Lee, John Romita Jr., Todd McFarlane, Michael Kaluta, Dave Stevens, Al Feldstein, Doug Wildey, Mike Ploog, Adam Hughes, Sergio Aragones. Actors such as Keanu Reeves, Christian Bale, Jessica Biel, Jackie Chan, David Boreanaz, Jet Li, Gary Oldman, Katherine Heigl, Kate Beckinsale, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Directors such as James Cameron, Sam Raimi, Joss Whedon, Guillermo Del Toro, Jon Favreau, Roger Corman, Zack Snyder, Terry Gilliam. And there's so many more.

So it seems odd when new Pop culture shows move in only a few miles away from the LOS ANGELES COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION location of the Shrine Auditorium, slap on a $20.00 admission, charge $500.00 and up on the dealer table rates, add one more day and people think they're getting a new and better show.

Every one of the LOS ANGELES COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION programs featuring Special Guests like the ones named above had an Admission of $8.00 or less, and table rates ranging from $85.00 to $105.00. There's no pipe and drape, no wrestling matches, and no costume contest. And sure, the lighting could be better in the Shrine. But if you like the old school style of Convention, and like to save money, to shop for Comic Books, Toys, and other collectibles in a really casual atmosphere, at a reasonable rate for both the collectors and the dealers, then this place is for you. So if you're a collector thinking of attending, now's a good time. If you're a dealer, the table rates are low and the load in is easy, so give it a try. This used to be a really great organized show years ago when they drew relevant Hollywood star power to the conventions, as one of the events the studios sent their actors and directors to promote their upcoming films, giving away unique promotional items, having trailers/preview footage, Q & A opportunities as well as often times a very well run and organized autograph session free for fans.

Fans were able to meet celebrities who normally didn't make public appearances, and top talents of the day. I remember their promotions of almost every blockbuster action, horror and sci-fi movie as well as TV shows like "Firefly", "Family Guy", and so many others.

I'm not sure what has happened in the past several years where it not only became a less frequent show (seems like 4x a year), but the guest list and programs went from "A" list, bypassed the "B" list and went straight down to the "C" list or below as far as having guests worth bragging about that can draw a crowd and give reason to show up. It's been a really really really long time since I've seen marquee headliners at this show.

I'm hoping 2012 will be the year this show is rejuvenated back to its glory days, as a show that I know fans looked forward to seeing how they'd out-do themselves with their stellar programming and loyally attending nearly every month.

It is at a nice location, easy parking, during it's peak, had a very well organized system for fans to line-up, get seating at the programs and acquire autographs that was as fair and well structured as I've seen in a show anywhere. The staff are friendly, the admission price is fair.

Oh, yeah, there are still comic books at the LA Comic Book and Sci-Fi convention. If you're looking to buy stuff, whether it's quarter books (or sometimes dime books) or people's overstock at 50 cents to a buck, or back issues, there's a mix of steady always-at-every-show dealers that bring what they bring (Comic Madness has all the new comic books, A&G have their Silver and Bronze Age books, Angelo's Comics has everything from Gold and Silver down to Bronze) and occasional dealers that bring their stock every now and again. (You can always tell who hasn't exhibited at this show in a while, because in the morning, all the existing dealers dig through their stuff first thing)

When I set up at this show, I bring quarter books, 80's and newer books at 25 cents to a buck, trade paperbacks at 50% off cover price, and either toys or some higher priced modern books. One of the stores in Long Beach usually brings their overstock new comics for 50 cents each (Given the $3.99 cover price, even I buy a stack of recently published books just to read when they're 50 cents each) and I'm blanking on some of the other names of the regular and occasional dealers. If you like toys, Mike's Collectibles N Stuff always has a great assortment of toys to choose from. George from Hypno Comics brings a great assortment of Modern and Copper items for sale.

If you love to dig and hunt and see all sorts of merchandise, this is the show for you, which is why I think they attract a constant crowd regardless of the special guests. (Heck, I'll be honest. There were times that I made more money from buying other people's comics at this show than selling my own during the day!) Like many, I yearn for the guests and crowds they had in the past, and I am hoping 2012 will bring good things indeed. Personally, I think there is such a wealth of comic book creator talent in the LA area that if the show was refocused on comic talent instead of Hollywood talent, there could be some great one day shows. But putting together any show is a lot of hard work, so I will just wish Bruce the best and decide if I can scrape together enough sellable stuff to rent a couple of tables for this show. :)

Joel

P.S. This is slightly off topic, but if anyone wants to get comics or magazines signed and CGC graded for Signature Series for guests at this show, PM me and let me know. We'll see what we can work out!

I think when booths with makeshift private rooms out of curtains concealing the adult material started popping up, making for a very odd and somewhat uncomfortable looking environment of trenchcoat shame, is when the show gained the unfortunate nickname "Ghetto Con" and the show started to go downhill... I really hope the show gets reinvigorated back to a more family friendly environment and reintroduces the high quality entertainment programming and hot A-List name guests of years past.

Stopped going when the porn DVD dealers outnumbered the comic dealers, sorry but that's a fact.

And I stopped going long before that nonsense started to happen. Too bad, this was once a real comic show and a lot of fun. The fun dissapeared and that's why other shows have started to make in roads.

Yeah, I concur.

This used to be a class act show!

Where other conventions would bring guests who are more nostalgic like Star Wars' baby Boba Fett, TV's Incredible Hulk, etc. and they'd charge fans for their autographs - - this show, years ago and consistently back then, brought in A-List actors and actresses who normally didn't make public appearances for fans to meet. It was well run and the guests were all signing autographs and taking photos for FREE, and that was an experience money couldn't buy.

Where else could you meet Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckensale, as well actors on their rise to fame like Kristin Stewart (pre-Twilight), Maggie Grace and so many others. The stars of today and superstars of tomorrow, as opposed to the celebrities of yesteryear. This indeed was a great show years ago.

Again... I hope the show's organizer gets the proper feedback to get inspired to return this show to its prominence as a premiere showcase for studios to promote their films and TV shows and meet the fans.

Nope, no comic creators beyond the ones that just show up to shop... :) But Yancy Butler could sign Witchblade comics, and she cancelled a couple of shows the last few years. Ron Ely could sign Tarzan comics, and the Superboy cast could sign Superboy comics.

As to the discussion on this thread, I concur. This show provided a lot of great moments and experiences before, whether I was attending the show and hanging out with folks like Seth Green who just walked around, or selling comics and toys at my own table during this show. I hope that the show will improve in 2012, either to return to their Hollywood roots or focus more on comics and less on the "other" categories of vendors.

So does anyone know when the next one will be scheduled?

I used to sell tjhere MANY MANY years ago. First when it was located at the OLD AMBASADOR Hotel. ( the Place where Robert kennedy was assasinated ).

I followed it to several locations until it found a permanent home at the Shrine.

I think the last time I sold there was back in 94, the day prior to the Northridge EarthQuake.

I have only gone back a few times since then.
