Steve B's answers to "tough questions"

256 posts in this topic

Finally got a chance to call Steve B. and follow up on my email to him after the WonderCon dinner earlier this month. Following are the questions, originally posted in the "More CGC Fun" thread, along with Steve's answers.

Q: Why did Steve B. imply one person is behind the "clean, press and resubmit" trend?

A: He didn't. I misconstrued something from one of his posts in the trimmed Bats 11 thread

Q: Was the trimmed Bats 11 from Danny Dupcak?

A: No.

Q: Steve's statement "not catching on to this guy sooner" (from the same Bats 11 thread) suggests more than just the Bats 11 ...?

A: Yes, there were other attempts from the same person, and in all honesty, there may have been 1 or 2 others that CGC missed, but a significant number were submitted that were caught and assigned restored grades.

Q: Are all the "clean, press and submit" jobs "kosher" in CGC's view? Any official position on "acceptably" restoring pedigreed books books that are in most cases high grade already?

A: If CGC were to find a means of identifying such restoration (pressing that doesn't involve disassembly, cleaning that doesn't involve solvents), CGC would still not consider such restoration to fall into the "unacceptable" (i.e., Purple label) category.

I thought you said they were tough questions.. confused-smiley-013.gif

did you also ask him these questions?

Like "Steve.. how many CGC comics can you fit in the back of a Honda Accord?"

Or ."Steve...if Hammer works out a deal with you.... would you create a new grading system for him?"

Now those are tuff questions..!!

GG thnx for sharing , and dont mind me...I am just being a smartass..

Garth, from what I can remember you had a whole sheet of paper with a list of questions and were taking notes (or was that Steve's notes?). Is that all we get? I thought this would be a lengthy epic. Thanks for sharing though. I surely enjoyed this debate/discussion when it was "live". ------Sid

these are nothing new, Steve has already posted as much in these threads.

I think Garth just wanted to confirm, in one post, the answers to many questions from other posts to keep everything straight.

Are those books still on marketplace, or did CGC track them down?

Arty: I don't think it's been definitively determined that there ARE other books...since the submitter(s) in question might have been submitting under multiple names/accounts. So the answer is, there *may* be other books out there with CT or trimming that are in Blue labeled slabs, but per Steve's statement to me, he seemed to feel that if any, they were few in number.

Well, I felt obligated to post these responses, since

- people were railing on me in the "More CGC Fun" thread about whether I even had the nerve to ask these questions, and some of those people might assume I never did ask them if I didn't post answers to them.

- some of these questions definitely had not been answered previously by Steve B.

- some forum members had PMed me recently to inquire about the status of the questions.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the term "tough questions" in the subject line? I only did that to signify these were the questions originally posed in Feb. or March, to job people's memories. I'm not trying to make myself out to be an investigative reporter here.

As for Steve's answers, I thought they were interesting, some more eye-opening than others.

I still don't agree with CGC's policy on the "clean, press and resub" trend, as it just seems too convenient, along the lines of "I can't define pornography, but I know it when I see it." Maybe someday there will be a type of restoration that CGC can't detect and doesn't consider 'acceptable' - but if that day ever comes, I wouldn't expect CGC to acknowledge the fact anyway...it would just be like letting the foxes loose in the chicken coop.

Although this information might be useful to newer members. The questions and answers were all stuff Steve did answer in previous threads. I'm all for more information, it just appeared that you were providing new Q&A.

BTW, when I went back to find these threads, it seems the mods have deleted their existance, so it's probably good the they are readdressed. thumbsup2.gif

This seems like as good a place as any to post this,so here goes:

After a full two days of bustings his balls in Philly,Steve then joined us for a wonderful dinner/get together(which CGC heavily substitized) and then stood around answering some tough questions and listening to quite a bit of flack directed at the Wizard First program. As forumites drifted in and out of the small group discussion,he rather patiently listened to the same points of view several times and gave resonible and logical answers to each, and although I still disagree with his thought on the subject,I came away with a clearer understanding of the deciscion, and an absoute belief that Steve is the right man to be heading up an independent grading service. 893applaud-thumb.gif

Are we likely to see any answers to 'tough' questions regarding this particular CGC decision? confused-smiley-013.gif

While much of what Steve said had been expounded on in depth on these forums, some of it was new(at least to me)

I did not record any of the conversation and will not attempt to retell, rephrase or paraphrase his words. There are way too many haters out here that would jump all over a misplaced comma or ambigiuos word and misconstrue what he didn't even say to begin with.Let's just say he took some heat and responded with grace and class.
