Popular Post Ameri
Good a place as any to share a cockamamie theory which might have been addressed before but I can't find anything about it so here goes. I was looking at an interior panel in Detective 29 and the 2 crooks looked vaguely familiar to the guys on the cover of Detective 27. I wondered whether the cover used for Detective 27 could really have been intended for the story in Detective 29? I've attached a pic to illustrate. Points to consider: 1) the crooks on the 27 are not the same crooks in the interior story but appear to be the same crooks in the 29. 2) Batman's cowl on the 27 has blue shading on top of the cowl which is not on the Batman cowl of the interior story (however, the blue top is used in the 29). 3) Batman's costume on the cover of the 27 has black shading or speed lines which is not on the Batman costume of the interior story (however, the speed lines are used in the 29) 4) the shade of gray in the costume on the cover of the 27 is different than the gray used in the interior story (however, the gray used on the cover of the 27 is the same gray as the 29) 5) most importantly, the square buckle on the utility belt on the cover of the 27 does not match the round buckle in the interior story (however, it exactly matches the square buckle in the 29) All conjecture of course, but based on this, could we reasonably assume that the cover of Detective 27 might have been intended for the story in Detective 29? It's not unusual for several stories to have been drawn simultaneously and given the mismatching of covers that DC was known for (like the Action 7 cover intended for the Action 2 story), there could have been a scramble to promote Batman and instead of using the usual generic detective cover, a last minute switch was made. If this sounds at all plausible, then the question would be what cover was really intended for Detective 27? The one used on the 28? Larryw7
Looking at the clothing of the villains in 29 compared to the bad guys in 27, there might be something to this theory. Primetime
Aman619
Interesting theory about the switching of covers …. Not entirely sure the look of the crooks being similar is more than Bob Kane’s limited drawing skills, or whatever crook swipe file he was using… but cool observations! Ameri
Batman's cape in the 27 story does not match the cover either in terms of the furls, number of points and ribbing, but the cape in the 29 is a match. Whatever the case may be, the cover to the 27 is the first to herald Batman's first appearance and that's all that counts. BB-Gun
Just finished watching the first Batman serial on TCM. The Second serial starts Saturday. Ron Haydock reviewed the first serial in Alter Ego 4. I have another book that features the second serial with stills and other stuff. How is this minor? 1st app Boy Commandos? A Joker app? Best of all, a class Jerry Robinson cover? I see major, not minor.
