That is truly awesome!!! I wish I had some artistic skills like that, 1/8th of that would be great even!! I remember your bat mobile from last year, another masterpiece!!

Following suit, you two are exceptional parents and your son is a very lucky little boy!!

The cake festivities are finished. It was pretty hilarious, usually the kids tear into all the "props". Not this time, everybody just kind of sat there and looked at it. My son wasn't touching that thing with a ten foot pole. I tried my best to get him to bite into the brains so I could get a picture but he wasn't having any part if it.

My wife broke the ice by taking the first taste and eventually the kids came around, but not with their usual fervor.

I have to admit there was something very wrong with watching them pick at the insides of his head.

The blood didn't work out as well as we'd hoped, the modeling chocolate was just glassy, the blood wouldn't set right on it...however that did make for a wonderful little "accident" with the brain. In that case the blood worked out splendidly.

I'll post some pics in a bit.

Thanks everybody for the very nice comments.

lol You guys did such a good job that you grossed out the kids. That is the best!!

Ok, I'm back with pictures from the "party". The cat had a minor medical emergency last night so I didn't get to post any pictures like I promised.

OK, on to the good stuff. This is my son...we made him close his eyes until the cake came out and we all sang happy birthday as my wife was walking it out. Sorry about the mess in the background, we are selling our house this summer and I am working on a few things.

This is the cake just shortly after my son blew out the candles. When we started this whole project we basically knew we wanted a zombie head and hand, but beyond that we didn't really have much of a plan and I think that shows in the final product. It's just a head and hand on a cake really, but for a 5 year old I'm sure it looks pretty spectacular. I would have liked to do a wash over the whole thing to make the wrinkles and such pop, but I'm not sure if it would have taken considering the nature of the modeling chocolate.

I thought the brains turned out friggin' awesome! Like I said earlier, the blood just wouldn't hold so it was difficult to put it in the places that we wanted.

So this whole time I'm taking pictures, nobody is touching it and it isn't because I'm taking pictures, nobody wants to have anything to do with that thing. Normally, the kids rip these cakes apart.

My wife had to break the ice.

That still didn't work so my wife had to take it to extremes.

Finally they got into it a little, I have to admit there is something very surreal about watching your kids pick at the insides of a human head.

My son going in for the kill!!He refused to eat any part other than the grass...lol.

Again, thank you for all the wonderful comments.

Greatest birthday cake ever! :whee:

FYI in the future, mix your blood coloring with clear Karo syrup. It will work much better. :gossip:

Yeah, that's part of the "recipe". The problem was with the modeling chocolate. The consistency of the blood was really good actually, it was thick and congealed. But thanks for the suggestion.

Awesome job on that cake. I've never seen anything like that before.

I used to do special FX makeup and sculptiung as a teen (I idolized Rick Baker and Rob Bottin) so this hit home for me.

You and your wife have great skills.

Thanks for sharing
