Boy Comics

Thanks guys. :)

Funny thing about this set is that Squeeks also has his own card as well. So the monkey sidekick gets featured on two cards, but the "main character," Crimebuster, only gets one that he has to share. Guess we know who Biro thought the real draw was for the title. ;)

I've talked about this a number of times, so I figured I might as well share it with everyone.

This is from Boy Comics #60, one of my favorite issues. This issue came out in 1949, right when the superhero market was crashing. Biro saw the writing on the wall and decided it was time to adapt Crimebuster to the changing tastes of the marketplace. It wasn't difficult in terms of content, since Crimebuster hadn't fought any "supervillains" since #17 or so. But in terms of design, Crimebuster's longjohn wearing look was getting a bit corny.

So Biro wrote this story, in which the supporting characters hold an intervention, finally telling Crimebuster what nobody had the guts to say until now: Dressing up in a costume is ridiculous. Instead, they buy him some grown up man pants and implore him to start looking like a normal person.

I love it because it's exactly what would happen in the real world, but it's also a great bit of meta-commentary by Biro on the goofiness of the superhero genre and why it was coming to an end in 1949.

I like the fact it says "you can’t make gold out of copper"! lol

What "pissed me off" (like americans would say) is that the seller pictured the paper as being a lot more white (and the staples looked well attached), while cover paper is delicate, and it‘s a bit brittle around the spine, which is the defect I loathe most, as you are afraid to browse it (even if the internal PQ is pretty good and supple). :P

That's a cool issue, Claudio - I've been looking for a solid copy of that book but no luck so far.

I like that back cover house ad...

I've got a pretty solid copy of that one. Truth be told, Boy #4 is really hard to find above Fine.

I have put together a website dedicated solely to Boy Comics, and mostly, of course, Crimebuster. It's really bare bones at the moment, but if there's any content anyone wants added, let me know and I'll see what I can do:

http://boycomics.weebly.com/

I also put together a Facebook fan page for Boy Comics, so fans around the world can get together and discuss the series. So far the page has... let's see... one like. Which was me. lol

https://www.facebook.com/levgleason

And, yes, I even set up a twitter account under the name Chuck Chandler, so you now have somewhere to get all your breaking Boy Comics news.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been any since 1956:

I don't know if I will actually manage to pull this off, but I have decided to create a new issue of Boy Comics. Since it's all in the public domain and nobody else seems to be doing it - which continues to surprise me! - I'm going to try to write, draw and publish Boy Comics #120 myself.

I'm not actually an artist, so no guarantees at all that it won't suck. It very well might. I'm also not sure how long it's going to take me - I'm guessing at least six months, and that's assuming I even finish it at all. But it seems like a fun project to try in my spare time, even though I can probably count on one hand the number of copies this will sell if I ever finish it.

If anyone is interested, I've started in a journal in the journal section following my progress.

I must be completely mad.
