Why CGC is the Only Choice for 3rd Party Comic Book Grading!

151 posts in this topic

This might belong in "The List" thread, but has anyone tried to look for a list of the top ten collectables as a result of this discussion (if we can call it that)?

They don't exist as far as I can tell...

I tried looking too (Google search) and didn't find anything. Also - Top 10 by what criteria? Number of collectors? Value of the most sought after items? Number of people selling it at flea markets?

Bottom line - I don't care about any list. I've been actively collecting comics since back when Amazing Fantasy 15 was valued in the OPG for $40 in MINT condition. Considering a "lesser" copy at NM+ sold for a million bucks, considering all the hugely successful movies, I think our "little" hobby has grown up.

Didn't read everything, so it may have already been said....

You can question the legitimacy of the TMNT video. It's not the only piece of evidence against PGX. Over the years, numerous instances have occured where PGX has ended up with egg on their face.

CGC is not perfect but they're, by far, the best game in town. Really, the only game in town. When controversies have arised, they've tried to address them. PGX is totally unreliable. Been caught with their hand in the cookie jar too often.

CGC definitely has some areas where improvement would be welcome. But, for now, they are the only company that has some semblence of legitimacy.

Is it just me or did about half of this thread mysteriously disappear?

About 150 posts were deleted.

What happened? Was there some kind of nerd orgy or something.

I believe that the reason for the post deletion had less to do with the fighting and more to do with the posted merits of other grading companies and why certain people turn to them along with other mentions regarding other companies.

Do you have to join anything to use your service?

All we do is grade comics. You don't have to join a society or do anything else to use our service and receive discounts on your submissions.

Fork you, the society is why I almost only buy my books entombed, thank you very much.

But just for the FYI record, you don't have to join a society or do anything else to use CGC's service and receive discounts on your submissions

This might belong in "The List" thread, but has anyone tried to look for a list of the top ten collectables as a result of this discussion (if we can call it that)?

They don't exist as far as I can tell...

There is not a specific list, but these hobbies are big time. I used EBay auctions as a barometer.

Classic Cars

Watches

Vintage Guitars

Toys

Video games

but the potentially the biggest and up and coming hobby may have been spawned from comic books itself, and that is

Comic book original art. OA is smoking hot right now.

There are some people who would say OA is a better investment bet then the comic books themselves.

Incorrect. I have been posting on these forums for well over four years now. What reason would I have to lie?

In my original thread I cited three sources to find such 'lists.' I refuse to do the work for you.

The first was TIAS, the second was The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles, and the third was Kovel's. Video games isn't even in on the list! Again, we have had a similar debate before, CC.

If anyone here cannot do a simple 'google' search to enter any of these sites, sort the data you need, and pull (or even flat out copy it); we are all in trouble.

To get an accurate view of the market, I would suggest sorting by top searches. This will provide a much more 'balanced' perspective in my opinion.

Kind Regards,

What about collecting publishing rights to all 70's funk and r&b? There are millions to be made as today's hip-hop and rap music continue to mine those deeper tracks for catchy hooks on their own songs.

Really? Wow. I have a masters degree. I've done my share of research. I looked around for a few minutes. No reason to spend more on a guy who can't support his own claims. Even the high schoolers I teach know how to do that.

I know of the list your talking about, but that seems much more antique bias.

I think since comic books are collectibles they should be put with Classic Cars,

Watches,Vintage Guitars,Toys,Video games,

and not glassware,pottery and ceramics.

I guess it depends on how you look at it? hm

I sincerely thank you for responding in a kind manner (and after today, I truly mean that). You have to remember that much more women collect than men. Remember when I stated that people tend to suffer from 'tunnel vision' in relation to their likes and dislikes? This works the same. While I agree that they should split antiques and collectibles into two stated categories, there is one problem. That being that not even antique dealers can decide where to 'draw the line.' This is why most lists will always be 'general' in nature and also feature jewelry and decorative items.

Glass is something NOT gender specific. It is usually number one or tied for the top spot every year!

Kind Regards,
