Not entirely certain but I think it was this...

I recall flying back from a Mid-Ohio Con, worried that the page would get creased; as, not planning on buying anything over the size of a trading card, I had no way to protect it (yet...) ??? Obviously, worked out OK.

Mine is nowhere near as cool as the rest to anyone but me and purely for sentimental reasons. I bought this Dinosaur For Hire #6 pg 14 from by Chuck Wojtkiewicz at HeroesCon in the early 90s. I also bought a Jason Pearson LOSH page at the same show (which I no longer have). They were $10 each.

I loved Dinosaurs for Hire! Especially the first few issues. Congrats on having that as your first OA!

Hey Malvin.

Agreed, the art is quite good and it's a fun series.

Purchased my first page from eBay a few months after getting back into comic books my summer break before college. I was browsing the auctions looking for Valiant Turok comics to buy, and this page showed up from my search. I bought it for only $20. Doubt it's worth any more than that now--it's a page from the unpublished Turok/Shaman's Tears crossover, issue 2! I love the composition.

Its probably not my first but I always wanted a Steve Ditko example.

I know it would be nice to have a Spidey page, but any port and all that, had to make do with the still expensive, Haunted #28 pages 6 & 7

Heh, why am I not surprised that your first piece is a Grell :)

Malvin

He and Green Arrow are the reason I collect art. Loved that series. I was lucky enough to finally have the money to buy that cover.

Cool replies so far, I can't believe some of the awesome art people got as their 1st purchases. Sandman, Bolland Covers, Sale Superman for all Seasons, McFarlane Hulk... just jealous!

Well the very 1st peice of OA I purchased was when I was looking for groomsman gifts for my wedding. I got the best man at my wedding a splash from The Hedge Knight, The prequel to A game of thrones.

For myself, while I was saving up for said wedding I had to get something cheap to get my 1st hit for myself =) so this is the 1st thing i got for myself, but I feel like some days it doesn't count...

It was cheesy and cheap, and looked cool! And I never even read the story..

So, I consider this 3rd page my 1st real purchase. It was the 1st one that I bought that I did my research on and really loved (it's now in a new home, inside a black hole)

This is the first piece of OA I obtained and got me started. From JSA Classified by Pat Oliffe and Drew Geraci. I got the piece at Wizard World Texas in 2006 or 2007. I got back into collecting around late 2004 and that Wizard World show was my first ever Con that wasn't a simple hotel show. I bought a sketch book there and thought I would get started.

I got a Batman sketch by Steve Epting and then finally settled to spend the rest of my art money on a commission by Drew. I told him what I wanted and left my sketch book with him. Checked back the next morning and he hadn't gotten to it yet. Finally, about an hour before the con ended he gave me back my book with nothing added and an apology. I was really disappointed because I had passed the opportunity to get other sketches because he was holding my book and now had nothing and I told him so.

Seeing that I was disappointed he offered my any page of OA he had for free and I chose this page because of how much I had enjoyed the arc. So, not the first page I ever bought, but my first page.

After that, I think this was the first page I ever bought. Off of ebay for $45. Another Oliffe piece, but this time a page from Booster Gold. I spent most of the next few years on commissions and sketches and didn't really get into OA until a friend helped orient me a bit at SDCC in 2009.

I posted this a couple of years ago in another thread on this topic,

but there has been a development, so here is again (with an update);

My first OA purchase was actually one of my smartest buys:

http://qurls.com?i=49105

Batman Shadow Of The Bat #1, page 15 -

the 1st appearance of Mr. Zsasz !

by the super talented Norm Breyfogle.

It's origins:

Back at 2005 (or late 2004), I'd finally figured out that I could actually

interact with some of the heroes/artists of my youth via the magic of

the interenet.

Landing on Norm Breyfogle's website and message board and was really

excited "meeting" him and chatting with him for the first time.

While browsing the galleries in his website I was surprised to have found

out that many of the pages posted online were actually offered for sale

and for some VERY reasonable prices.

Then I made the plunge and decided to pick one out of hundreds (?)

of amazing pages by one of my all-time favorite artists.

I decided to settle on a page from the first SHADOW OF THE BAT arc.

Obviously, all the main splashes were already gone by then, but one of

the available "quieter" pages had something very special about it -

the very first very first "appearance" and mention of a major Bat-villain !

The thing is - he appeared caged in a box, with only a small window,

from which you could only see his mouth... a great mystery buildup...

but not much of an "appearance".

Zsasz finally made his full appearance in the next issue, where he revealed

his scarred body in a shocking scene which in my mind remains a "game

changer" when it comes to Batman comics. (when I read it in the '90s it was

this moment that transferred this tale and villain from a "standard" Batman

story into the VERTIGO realms...

You also couldn't get a more "full" appearance than this - with only a very well

placed word balloon keeping this page code approved.

I CRAVED for that other page with Zsasz's full appearance (and nagged

Norm about it), but that other page was long gone.

Finally,I decided to just be happy with having the actual, listed, 1st appearance,

thinking I'd probably never see the "other" page outside it's published

form (and recognizing the opportunity still at hand).

Some years and many pieces later, I thought I'd somehow completed

the circle when I'd bought the Batman: Shadow Of The Bat poster artwork

(which was originally published when the first issue saw light):

http://qurls.com?i=50980

A good companion to my Shadow Of The Bat #1 page and a fitting

compensation and replacement for losing that other Zsasz page "forever"...

I was satisfied. And suddenly, just a few short months later, the actual page

I was wanting ever since I started collecting original art, popped up on EBay (!!!!).

A real OMG moment for me. To me, this page wasn't just a "big one",

but THE "big one".

Sorry guys, but there couldn't have been a real competition, I had to have it.

Now it resided in my gallery, alongside the other parts of the 'Shadow Of The

Bat' trinity:

http://qurls.com?i=51031

The page had really brought me to a full circle and for a while I even entertained

the notion of quitting the never ending chase after more pieces, being please

with what I already have had. As to be expected, I caved in as the bug was

stronger than me... :P

Thank you for sharing your "origin" stories, I really enjoyed them (as I have

enjoyed the art.

As always, I really enjoy your comments and thoughts (though I can only read

your comments, not your thoughts...).

Best,

Gal
