"Thor - Norse god - He's got to be Scandinavian I think? "

Is Heimdall Scandinavian? Apparently the movie makers didn't think so.

If anything, be offended they selected the wrong actor. Before there was Idris Elba, we had...

Only the noble lines were Norse gods.

Not every citizen of Asgard is a Norse god.

Or would Volstagg be the god of.... gluttony? :insane:

An Aesir shapeshifter? Is that something they did in the modern comics, because that is not what he was originally based on?

I'm talking about Heimdall.

Heindall was always a god in Norse mythology.

In Norse mythology, Heimdallr is a god who possesses the resounding horn Gjallarhorn, owns the golden-maned horse Gulltoppr, has gold teeth, and is the son of Nine Mothers. Heimdallr is attested as possessing foreknowledge, keen eyesight and hearing, is described as "the whitest of the gods", and keeps watch for the onset of Ragnarök while drinking fine mead in his dwelling Himinbjörg, located where the burning rainbow bridge Bifröst meets heaven.

Did Marvel change this and alter his origin where he was something other than a Norse god? I ask because I didn't realize this.

He's an Odinson, Thor's half-brother.

hm

You sure about that? Here is what Marvel has to say about Heimdall.

Heimdall was the brother of the warrior Sif. For ages, he stood as the guardian of Asgard's Rainbow Bridge, defending the city's gates from any intruders, and was one of the most trusted servants of Odin.

Hey, Marvel missed something with its own backstory on a character. If Heimdall is black in the movie, then what about Lady Sif?

*edit: And would explain why he could be just about any color/race he wanted to be. lol

I just checked my Norse mythology book, and it says the same exact thing.

He was not the brother of Thor, but rather another Norse god that stood watch for Ragnarok. Also, that his hearing was so acute he could hear grass grow.

:o

Who would want that for a power?

You shouldn't have to jump through those kinds of hoops to justify a bad miscasting.

Take a breather for a moment and you will realize his brevity wasn't leading to what he was trying to talk about. One moment, someone is talking about Volstagg, and the next thing he is meaning Heimdall.

But bad miscasting or not (which is your opinion), even the description was incorrect. Heimdall is not known in Norse mythology to be Odin's son.

See - back off from the movie beatdown and you learn some things.

What color will the Thing be?

Studio marketing has identified purple as kid-friendly, culturally safe, and cheaper to apply as they will mix Grape Kool-Aid with tar.

It's a win all-around!
