Early Appearance of Harley Quinn?

When did I ever say Comichron is associated with Diamond?

Twice actually:

So, the book was distributed in January 1995 according to Diamond, but was published in February 1995 according to the Copyright registration database. I've seen other books off by as much as 3 months in the Copyright registration database when compared to the Diamond charts.

You clearly have reading comprehension problems or you are purposely being obtuse. Let's agree not to interact and save the boards lots of heartache.

ISBN is for books and book like media. Comic books and other monthly magazines are not given ISBN numbers. Also pertaining to copyright dates, the date on the packaging is likely the date the copyright was applied for. I think it quite impossible to narrow any particular book down to its exact month produced and it's on shelf date. The board game is also dated 1993 and has Harley in a form of printed matter (a game piece) It could be argued that it was out before the book and record combo. Again a nice Harley collectible, but its media form is a book and not a comic book.

The board game is dated 1992

Publication (as to commercially available items, e.g., periodicals and serial publications) means the date of first distribution for sale.

I would posit that the DC legal filer was not necessarily diligent in his work.

-------------------------

The copyright office has multiple definitions. I perused their website. I think if you offer for sale (to be delivered at a future date) and give a "copyrightable" description sufficient to protect the underlying work, the date of the offer can also be considered "publication"...at least under the materials on the copyright office website.

With that said, in this case I think it is the date of distribution and you're right about the DC filer.

Question is, what about the book 'n tape combo? Orders for that would indeed be solicitied in advance and the plot likely summarized in advance.

I think Golden Books is now with Random House. I left a message with a rep there over a week ago and have not yet heard back. I will try and follow up.

I would be just as interested in knowing which HQ was drawn first. Perhaps each artist started working on their respective books at the same time, but I highly doubt it. If I had to guess, I would think the Golden Book Harley Quinn was first. The artist on this book mentioned that after her appearance in the Animated TV Series, DC promoted HQ through merchandise next (which included the Almost Got 'Im book). It is plausible that DC had more lucrative channels and, perhaps, higher margins to distribute/sell merchandise rather than comics. It would seem logical that merchandise came before the comics. Just a theory. I have no concrete proof....yet.

I saw this thread 3 or 4 weeks back and sent in a request to Random House. This is the response I received concerning the exact date in which Almost Got 'Im hit the shelves. TIFWIW...

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for contacting Random House Consumer Services. We appreciate your interest in our publications.

The date that “Batman Almost Got'em\Tale + Tape” went on sale to the public was 12/31/1999 under the ISBN 13: 9780307143761.

We do not have any information indicating if it had been licensed to another company prior to that under a different ISBN.

Thanks so much for your time, patience and understanding.

Respectfully,

Welcome to the boards. We need good detectives like you here. That was great leg work. Although I think this issue was put to bed a while back. However still a nice tidbit. 1999 hmm?

I don't think it was "put to bed" so much as the results were inconclusive, I can definitely say that the 1999 public release date is wrong since I bought two off them of the rack in 1993, just don't remember which month.

12/31/1999 is the date Amazon has for this release. I suspect that is Amazon's "don't know, but sometime in the 1990s" date. 04/01/1993 is the date that Google shows and another online book seller. 1999 is absolutely wrong as the book itself says 1993. And, lest we go through this again, the character was introduced in 1992.

Thanks,

Ron

Thanks Junkdrawer!

What I took from this response was that the records from Random House are a dead end unless someone knows an employee there who can do some actual digging. The system they are using to field questions is showing a pre-2001 merger for GoldenBooks/RandomHouse and pre-Y2K date of 12/31/1999 just for that particular ISBN #. The date kind of speaks for itself, it is clearly the start/end of a contract, ownership, or filing decision. No way would they have waited a week to after Christmas to place the product on shelves anyways.

The response from Random House doesn't really mean a whole lot except

-You won't be finding any definitive answers through the outlet of Random House's customer service because of their system limitations

-It shores up this part of the issue that has been previously discussed

This IS the answer. Period. :sumo:

Regardless of the diligence of the filer, this is a sworn statement under the penalty of perjury by the publisher.

Need I highlight this small amount of text?

So we know by 9/93 the date on BA12, that book had been on the shelves what 1 or 2 months?
