Mystery Tales 19 Club

I sold all of my MT in the past year. There was one bidder on eBay trying to grab every Mystery Tale. I don't know if he's still buying them, but he was binning mine as fast as I listed them. I listed one twice by accident and he took both.

Nice man, he said he was trying to corner the market (on just that title) and he alone had driven those prices up.

I don't remember his ID and its hard to tell now that all the titles are masked, but he was paying outrageous prices. He didn't care about grade unless it was falling apart..

Yes, a single buyer has been responsible for the hype - he's been doing this for some years now.

He's been on hiatus for a while now, however.

I was watching it also, thought it would top out at 1200, nice sale. I feel like heritage under grades.

At least that has been my experience.

Although you couldnt see the MT 19 from what I saw it looked FN for sure maybe better.

I was following that auction, assuming that everyone else on the thread was as well. ;)

The MT 21 looked nice, but the money book was surprisingly the obscured one. Clearly the market is good when bidders are prepared to go long without a complete scan.

Nope. This was a Metro purchase circa 2005-6. :gossip:

Oops, my bad.

Did you take part in that thread though? It was actually great entertainment...books were going for several hundred dollars in seconds. I remember Goldust got some nice books but I think he missed out on the 19. It was a nice, nice copy. It was almost a complete run. Issue 40 was conspicuously missing though...and I'm still looking for that one...

I picked up err, a few issues, but got caught off guard when the 19 came along. Always been a favorite of mine - no surprise when the frenzy ensued over that book.

...

I sold an item that was too good to sell and when I inquired I was quoted a price 15x what I had sold for two years earlier. I was incredibly choked because I felt disrespected to be quoted that much on something I had sold to him in the first place. And this is coming from someone who normally doesn't care WTF is done with sold items once they are gone. But the scale of what I perceived to be the greed got to me.

Im seriously intrigued by the social rules that might exist in this little community.

Was the 15x price near fair market value or was it a gouging?

How does the fact that you were the one that sold it to him affect what the price should be (really I want to know). Is the expectation here in this community that the original seller should get some sort of discount/best price vs what the new seller is asking (lets assume the seller is asking market).

Have to admit, I've been keeping an eye out for one of these... though I don't think these high grade beauties are in the cards. Any idea of FMV for G to VG range?

The market is obviously strong in the upper grades, but oddly enough lower grade copies of that book seem to be even more thin on the ground. I wouldn't expect to pay in excess of $200 for a book in that range, though, although Atlas books have been somewhat resurgent this year.

A few appeared to be River City books but weren't sold as such. Any thoughts one way or the other?
If you post a link to the ones you have questions on I'll answer.

Here are the links to the lots with the possible River City markings:

And when he eventually dumps them, you can buy them back for a song. Brilliant! :D

Agreed, very thin in any condition much like some of the Menace books 1, 11, 9.

Though I believe Menace had a much, much smaller print run.

As far as the stratospheric prices for the entire Mystery Tales run, I'm curious as to what opinions are:.Will the fad pass and will prices come down considerably, or are these new inflated prices going to be the norm for for the title going forward?

Unless the person who took the volume out of the market sells, I doubt they come down dramatically.

There is a dearth of supply and the demand side of the equation seems to be sloping up as people realize an already short supply is getting shorter.

So this book was one of my grail books. It really stood out when a boardie (apologies for forgetting who the particular boardie was) sold a high grade run of most Mystery Tales issues sometime over the past year or two. These books were flying out with most having several :takeit:'s coming through in seconds after being posted. Among all those covers, this one was the coolest to me. I have wanted a copy ever since. The other day, I managed to track down a copy...

The books looks great in hand. What colors! I'm very happy to be a part of this exclusive club. I also saw that one was just posted on ebay with a buy it now of $10,000!

If you want to take a look at that issue it can be found here:

Anybody else out there have a sweet copy of this awesome book? Or any other Mystery Tales you wanna show off?

Congrats on your book, peterpark -- looks like a book from Blazing Bob, if I recognize the handwriting on the price sticker. :)

Sorry that happened with one of your books, Scott -- if/when I sell things, it doesn't pay to look back, I just consider it... gone.

That is my old copy. I am the person who had it graded. I sold it to a fellow board member, who has told me many times that if I ever wanted to buy it back, I would get first shot if he decided to sell it. A Gentleman's Agreement if you will. Now here it is on Ebay, for 9400 more than I sold it to him. I don't think po'ed can fully express what I am feeling at this moment.

Scott, I assumed you no longer wanted it since you:

a) Started a thread saying you were leaving comics

b) Stopped posting on the boards

c) Sold off a bunch of your books

d) Read and ignored my last PM to you when I asked you how you were doing.

Instead of just sending me a PM like a normal person, expressing interest in getting it back, I guess you decided this would be the better course of action. I'll pull the listing and put it back in my collection, because I am sure as hell not selling it back to you after this.

Next time just send me a PM letting me know that you are still collecting comics after a very public exit, or better yet don't read and ignore PMs I send you.

Have a great night bud.

Hey Andy,

I wouldn't take the book if you gave it to me. It is my business if I choose to sell off some books, and it is my right to experience burn out. I guess you just played detective and decided that the one true book that I regretted selling would not be wanted back. This fact was expressed to you in several messages over the last 2 years. I still have a lot of books that I may sell one day. I hope this does not negate the "agreements" I have with other buyers who have promised me first shot. I don't think it will, because they have something you obviously lack, class. Here is a portion of your last message...which I did not intentionally ignore..but life happens and I neglected to respond. This is the last paragraph of your message:

That said, if you really decide to part with them, give me a shout. I have every book you sold me, and don't have any selling plans, so you will at least know where they are.

Nice words, but I should know better than to trust a lawyer. You have a great night too. I will...because I know I can look in a mirror and feel good about what I see.

Though I always enjoy board drama (and am grateful I'm not involved in this one) I don't think one has a leg to stand on when one sells a book, as to how it's priced/offered/etc. once they've sold it. I don't understand the reason to lash out at October over this one. Nor do I see any reason to hate on someone who happens to be a lawyer. If that's a common sense rule, then I wouldn't be allowed to like or trust foolkiller (for example) and that's just a non-starter. Sorry Scott.
