Schomburg Top 10 Covers

127 posts in this topic

Recently, board members have attempted to rank order the top 20 GA keys. Naturally, debates ensued regarding what constitutes "key." Many agreed that first appearances of major characters qualify as key but cool covers do not.

No disagreement here about that logic. Nevertheless, I need an outlet for cool covers. So, I will take the liberty of narrowing the focus. The challenge: Rank order your top-10 favorite Schomburg covers using coolness alone as your rank discriminator.

No doubt, there will be much debate. Here's my list for starters:

1. Suspense comics 3 (hooded-Nazis, impending sacrifice)

2. Startling Comics 49 (robot carrying girl)

3. All-Select 1 (Timely big three, Nazi castle)

4. Daring Mystery Comics 1 (futuristic city)

5. Captain America Comics 3 (Red Skull)

6. Terrific Comics 5 (spiked wheel, shot tooth)

7. USA Comics 7 (classic Cap and Bucky)

8. Human Torch 12 (burning arm to bone)

9. Sub-mariner Comics 11 (Subby in dragon’s jaws)

10. Exciting Comics 66 (Judy of the Jungle perched on eagle)

Just missed the cut:

Wonder Comics 15 (impending dissection)

Marvel Mystery Comics 5 (woman in tube, impending incineration)

Exciting Comics 61 (Judy of the Jungle running with panther)

All-Select 2 (Timely big three, Cap with Gatlin)

Marvel Mystery Comics 40 (zeppelin cover)

Enjoy Christmas Eve everyone!

I'm just gonna show the favorites that I have in my photobucket from my collection. Clearly, I don't have MANY Schomburg covers that I would put in my top ten!!! These are listed in order of most favorite on down.

I guess these are my top ten books that are in my photobucket and are currently in my collection. I have others too, but keeping it to ten, these make the cut.

I don't think this would be possible for me. There are dozens that I love and often for different reasons. The airbrush covers speak for themselves, as to the whacky death machines of MMC.

If you are going to do it right, you need scans of all his covers plus a poll to pick your top 10.

Sounds like a good idea Cheetah and Timely. I'll collect contenders from this thread and post a poll next week unless somebody wants to do it sooner. Should be fun. Definitely a good idea to have the scans accompany the poll. While I'm pretty familiar with most of his covers, it would be nice to really study them and possibly have my vote swayed to one that I hadn't really taken the time to look at before.

I'm leave numbers 9 & 10 blank for now and revisit this list later in the thread. :cloud9:

I'm sure that after I complete this list I'll think of many others and update my choices to reflect the virtually limitless number of top-notch GA covers that Alex churned out. lol
