This one needs a little setup, imho.

It's August, 1949. The success of romance comics, started by S & K in Sept 1947, was undeniable at this point. The majors were rushing in - Fox, Marvel, and Fawcett in 1948. The beginning of 1949 saw St. John and Harvey join the feeding frenzy, and April brought even the minors - Ace and ACG. It's summertime 1949 and Busy Arnold saw he was late to the game and needed to do just that - get busy in a big way.

Bill Ward was tapped to do the premiere cover for Heart Throbs #1. Quality had to separate themselves from the already formed pack and capture market share with something unique, fresh, exciting. Ward reached down deep into his artistic soul and produced work unlike anything he had done before.

Something...beautiful.

This cover is not just one of Ward's best images - it also represents the genre in a way few others did before or since.

C.C. Beck is underappreciated.

He is, and his early Captain Marvel/Whiz Comics covers (before his approach became more 'cartoony' I feel to disguise him from a certain 'man of steel')are some of the best from any publisher. Nice choice
