the time you went all in on a book...

My big 1st purchase was when I went all out for this book. Paid 'next year's prices' for it at the time but I didn't regret. Out of a very small handful of books, it's still probably the top or 2nd from the top book I'd like to have back.

the first time I went , "all in" on a comic was right after I joined these boards...I was venturing into the bigger GA keys and thought I am gonna go for one I love!! Cap 3 no less...I sold some keys and set a bid I could live comfortably with and didn't look back and stuck to my guns!! I lost but it was a fun experience!! GAtor and the new owner had the book in Chicago and let me see it...nice guy!! small world I mean the odds of me walking up to GAtors booth at this exact time and me bringing up that book was crazy!! It all worked out though bc I was originay looking for a lower grade anyways and I did get to own a beautiful 5.0 for a short period of time so hey, got to meet some cool chaps and see and own some great books even though not for long was a fun experience...it made me realize that at this stage in my life if I want to put away some money, support my family in nice home, and have a diversified comic collection the mid to high 4 figure books will have to wait a few years but in the meantime I will keep hunting for and peicing together one of the lowest graded collection of keys and classic covers I can ever hope for and having a great time doing it!!
I love your collection Gino. I'm doing kind of the same thing with my collection. The obvious exception is the All Select #1 in my sig. I went all in on it and I have not regretted it yet. :wishluck: In fact, my wife made me send it to CGC because I kept pulling it out of the bag and reading it! :roflmao: I couldn't help it; it was like the book called to me.

haha!! thanks and that All Select #1 was well worth it!!! such a great book!! :headbang:

Sometimes a book is so cool it clouds your ability to reason (Silver Streak 6). Sometimes you just know it is the best copy you will ever see (Single Series 20). Sometimes you love it so much that you don't care (Jumbo 10). Sometimes it's a once in a lifetime opportunity (Action 15 cover). Sometimes something is so goofy and personal that it doesn't matter (Fast Willie Jackson 1). Sometimes you make a huge mistake (Human Torch 1)...but hopefully it will all even out in the end.

well said...this is a good post

I was planning to go "all in" on a book in next month's HA auction, but decided on a house instead to go all in on

That had to be a tough choice :baiting:

Just kidding, once you are in the house I am sure you will be back to tearing it up.

That's the plan :)

We are scheduled to close 11/14

I'll play the wet blanket as I think the only answer is "it depends."

Is the price you're willing to pay "mad money" that you'd splurge on some other conspicuous consumption that you wouldn't mind foregoing?

Is the book essential to what makes your collection special?

Will the purchase take up most or all of your budget for the year and you comfortable with what you would give up?

Would you rather have the pedigree kitten in the window of the pet store or a few more bargain-priced kittens off of Craig's list?

Are you confident you understand the market well enough to know how scarce it is and how much of a premium you would be paying?

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Market shmarket! Buy the danged book :makepoint:

Ok. Do whatever it takes.

Sell your car. Mortgage your home. Run over grandma for the inheritance.

Happy now? :taptaptap:

I'm a bit out of synch here it appears. There are books I'm prepared a bit more than my guess at FMV, but not a whole lot. I figure there's always another rainbow to chase - and I think it's the chase of the 'right' copy that's a lot of the fun. Having watched for a few years now, a lot of big books get recycled. That suggests to me that they either cost too much for that buyer (opportunity cost to owner is too high) or they didn't bring as much pleasure as the $$ demanded. Just my 2c

If the OP was thinking about some of those Planets coming up soon..... there are several, if I were he (with his collecting focus), that would definitely merit a GPA high. 2c GOD BLESS...

I bought this book last year for around $5,100, which was quite a bit more than I had expected to pay.

I have had second thoughts about it because it was the reason couldn't afford to donate very much money to endangered species charities last year. I feel like going after it was a little self-indulgent.

It's a beautiful book, and I think it's unlikely I'll ever see a nicer copy, but if I had it to do over again, I would have let it go. There are to many nice books out there to go out on a limb for any particular one.

What a gorgeous Fight 20 you have. Scarce? Check. Bondage cover? Check. Highest graded? Check. Pedigree? Check. Great Colors? Hell yeah!

Think of it this way.... Fight 31 seems to get much of the hype in the Fight run. Fight 20 is scarcer and has its own amazing cover. If you had the 9.2 Fight 31 it would probably be an 8-10k book in this nutty market. You made a great purchase and you have one heck of a book.
