Gator, have you considered the possibility of hypothecating the comic collection? Just a thought to maybe have your cake and eat it too. If you indeed buy the real estate, you could then liquidate the books after the fact.

Or just take a mortgage for half the amount and if after a year it makes sense to liquidate the books then start the process?

Sell, and take the risk, brother.

I've sold my previous collections twice over - once to fund charitable work on behalf of Warchild in the former Yugoslavia, then something similar in India, which included financing a young woman's education.

In both cases, I have never for a single moment regretted my decision, or felt it was a sacrifice - quite the reverse. The collections funded once in a lifetime opportunities I'll never forget.

Now I'm into my third collection, and I'd do the same again without hesitation.

You know you can get the books back, even Centaurs, or most of them, or different books.

So the question is, will the opportunity you are looking at likely come again or not?

The books most certainly will.

... some I will likely never own again reasonably.

This phrase is far more dignified than the many other ways one could phrase this. (thumbs u

You site an opportunity.

Ignore this if it is too personal -- but are you exchanging your books for another physical object or a business investment opportunity?

One would seem to be a shift in the collecting game, the other -- a game changer.

my wife has always desired to live "on the beach"....I tried a few years ago to purchase her dream house, only to miss by a hair.... sometimes when you miss opportunity, you relegate yourself to never having a similar opp again....

keep in mind, I don't have a "job" or steady income, so even with hard assets (real estate), it is difficult to get a 7 figure loan to purchase a house....so I have to come in "cash" ready....

but timing is critical...so, we will see!

G.A.tor you need 7 figure. I live in CA and the price hear are way more than Florida. I have been in the same spot as you and it went wrong.

I sold my Action 2 my 7 and 10 20 and 23 Bat 1 two copys Tec 3 and 4 and 28 few others Tec 27 coverless nice unrestored Cap 1 and you get the point this was in 2008.

I have /Had a wife 23 years 5 kids they grew up. Wife went to school to be a nurse.

I bought our dream house and when she got a job it paid 125 hour .

3 mounth later i live in a modular home she has house and i cant get my books back unless i pay 75% more than i sold for.

I only used 50k for down payment so i got more left but i hate not haveing my books.

I want them back but i am 52 now could stroke out anytime.

Do i really want them back that bad :preach: Now that they are gone and money not there to get back i thought maybe i collect money.

I look at that all day long.

what is this rubbish?

I think it's a safe bet that woowoo doesn't make a living as a copy editor.

I am a comic GEEK with bad eyes and only high school edumacation or something like that zzz

Sure they would! Just sell the bank on the idea that you live in comics and get 'em classified for a reverse mortgage. Fred Thompson should back you up. (thumbs u

Wow banking in the US sure has changed in the last 5 years. Pre crash you just had to be able to breath and you could get a mortgage.

I doubt that any bank would;

you would need to approach a deep pockets entity in our hobby, such as Metropolis Collectibles, have them review the inventory, and see if they would guarantee a specific payment by a certain date, if you are indeed able to make your R.E. purchase.

You have an inventory with a certain specific value; it's just a matter of finding one in the trade -or hobby- to agree to buy within a certain time frame if you need to sell.

Seems pretty simple

Sell your inventory first

Why even go down the path of your personal collection first. Then retire from selling and go beach combing. You can always buy and sell like the rest of us remote collectors. From the office in our underwear.

That's my problem. I already "retired" so to speak about 8 years ago. My inventory I need to continue to derive enough income to pay the tangible monthly/annual bills.

I can't liquidate all of it as I'm not capable of piecing out "my" collection. lol

If you have a family, the money will all disappear 5-10 times faster than you think.

I have a wife and 4 kids. Older two in college and third nearing college. Luckily I am a fairly good steward of money so no issues there (thumbs u

Best of luck with whatever you decide. As others have said if your personal collection includes some of those Timely's and DC's that are easier to replace I would guess there is more money in them right now than your other, more personal, comics. I'm in the "the hunt is the thing" camp and wouldn't mind selling off most/all my collection to fund something important to me or my family. I'd just start again.

I think gator has the right idea... If he pedigrees his entire collection and sells thru ha or cc it might actually increase his overall return. I disagree selling it piece by piece . The other way would be to bring the entire collection to San Diego comic con... Premier sell it at convention... Then consign what does not sell to ha or cc and hand it to them when convention ends. I assume we are talking about 250 books plus

I think I have 40 or so copies. At least 30 are the $100-200 variety lol
