A first-look image from M.J. Bassett’s sword-and-sorcery feature Red Sonja, adapted from the comic book series and starring Matilda Lutz as the titular character, have been released by Millennium Media.

In the photo above, Lutz is framed by a fiery backdrop as she holds a sword over her shoulder. The ensemble cast also includes Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan as Draygan, Michael Bisping as Hawk, Martyn Ford as General Karlak and Eliza Matengu as Amarak.

Red Sonja is adapted from the comic books of the same name by Dynamite Entertainment and based on the heroine created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas. The cameras are rolling on the film at the Bulgarian Nu Boyana Studio, with additional shoots at the Greek Nu Boyana Studio later this month.

Lutz’s recent projects include Paramount Pictures’ Zone 414 and Neon’s Revenge. Bassett’s projects include Solomon Kane, starring James Purefoy; Lionsgate’s Endangered Species; Rogue, starring Megan Fox; and episodes of Freeform’s Motherland: Fort Salem.

There are dozens of comic book adaptations on the horizon from major publishers like Marvel and DC, but one of the more independent experiences that audiences are looking forward to is Red Sonja, a new take on the iconic barbarian. Millennium Media confirmed today that the first teaser for the movie will be unveiled next week at a special panel being held during San Diego Comic-Con. In addition to the first official teaser for the new movie being released, a panel will be honoring the 50th anniversary of the character, which will also include exclusive previews of creators who are developing new storylines for the figure. The Red Sonja panel will be held on Friday, July 21st at 11:30 a.m. PT in room 5AB.

Per press release, "Dynamite announces an exciting panel for this year's San Diego Comic-Con, as creators and fans celebrate 50 fantastic years of Red Sonja! In addition to a retrospective discussion on the character's legacy and past, her future will be looked to with new comics, novels, as well as an exclusive teaser trailer debut for her upcoming blockbuster Millennium Media film starring Matilda Lutz!

"Red Sonja, LLC president, executive editor, and a producer of the coming film Luke Lieberman will serve as panel moderator, joined by franchise contributors Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Amy Chu, Dan Panosian, producer Mark Canton, and other guests.

"The beloved She-Devil With a Sword's story began in comics in 1973, and now 50 years later she remains the greatest sword-and-sorcery female heroine of them all! She's hacked and slashed her way into the hearts of fantasy and comics fans all around the world. An incredible range of writers and artists have taken on her stories in her native comics medium, including the likes of Roy Thomas, Frank Thorne, Gail Simone, Mirka Andolfo, Mike Carey, Michael Avon Oeming, Jim Zub, Louise Simonson, Mark Russell, Alex Ross, Mel Rubi, and countless more.

"With the first issue launching right in sync with San Diego Comic-Con, fans will get to dive right into her latest epic series celebrating the anniversary by Torunn Grønbekk (Thor, Realm of X) and fan-favorite franchise artist Walter Geovani. How this series came together and teases for what comes next will be discussed on the panel. As well as a surprise additional comic series by a top creator!

"Attendees of the panel will be the first to see a teaser trailer of the upcoming highly anticipated Millennium Media (Expend4bles) film starring Matilda Lutz (Revenge, Rings, Medici) as the fearsome warrior, Wallis Day (Sex/Life, Batwoman) as Annisia, and Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy, Misfits) as Draygan with M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) directing and a -script written by Tasha Huo (Netflix's Tomb Raider).

"The audience will also get the opportunity to watch a fun tribute video from some of the biggest creators associated with the character. Key details from the panel will be shared widely with fans following the event."

Oh man, I hope it's gonna be something. Any feedback on the trailer yet? We are seriously overdue for a kick-arse girly barbarian show.

Yeah I REALLY want this to be good, but for some reason I'm expecting trash. That's without having seen a skerrick of footage, and knowing nothing about it, I'm just expecting it to suck. Please let me be wrong. There's nothing more I would love right now than a kick-arse Red Sonja movie. Rated at least MA15+ so they can give it the blood and guts it deserves.

The Girl Power movie genre hasn't really given us anything amazing, so I'm kinda with you. But there's always hope. One of these screenwriters for these female hero flicks have to have seen:

Oddly enough, I just upgraded my DVDs recently with the bl-ray three action set.

Well worth it. And a shelf space saver.

Dude! Three classic movies that feature some real badarses! It’s too bad we can’t go back to that genre, they really put out good stuff with female-centric characters.

I will say, I did enjoy Captain Marvel as I thought they did a good job portraying Carol Danvers, I am bummed the next movie she has to share with two other people. I’d prefer another Captain Marvel solo story.

@Dr. Balls

I think this will be the beginning of the bad girl craze in comic book movies.

Bring on Vampirella, SHI, and Lady Death.

Marvel Feature #4

don't know if you're going to replace Nostradamus.  If it isn't trash, it will be a gigantic shock.

Oh man, that’d be a dream come true. Step aside, Marvel - the Indy properties are the next big comic book movie trend!

in his autobiography from 2012, he talks about making this movie and the ins and outs of the process, literally. it's a good listen/read. and spoiler alert, yes, they slept together.

Speaking of which...

‘Red Sonja’s Star Reveals the Big Differences Between the Reboot and the Original

Quote

THE BIG PICTURE

  •  Matilda Lutz is excited for an empowering take on Red Sonja , stepping away from its male-gaze origins.
  •  Lutz embraced the iconic metal bikini, used differently for empowering purposes in the film.
  •  The Red Sonja film has no release date yet.

Red Sonja star Matilda Lutz talked female empowerment and chainmail bikinis with Collider's Steven Weintraub at SXSW this weekend for her upcoming film Magpie. Lutz was effusive about her experience making the long-awaited film with director M.J. Bassett (Rogue), and discussed the character's comic book origins, which frequently delved into the realm of cheesecake, and how the film takes the character in a different direction:

"It was a great experience. The prep and stunt rehearsals and horseback riding, [were all] things that I hadn't done before, so the whole process of prepping was amazing. Working with MJ as a director was incredible. And what I think is different from what we know of Red Sonja is that it was very, and the comics as well, was very male gaze-oriented and this is a completely different story . It's a very empowered woman, and that's what I loved about the story. I don't know yet when it's coming out, but I'm very excited to see it. I haven't seen anything yet."

Red Sonja has not yet set a release date. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates. In the meantime, Lutz's new film Magpie is screening now at SXSW.

Around 17:40 is when Red Sonja becomes a topic

At risk of being labeled sexist, can we have an empowered woman who is also sexy to look at?

Can we cater to the male gaze just a tiny, little bit?

I consider myself fairly liberal, and am against discrimination, and demeaning of women, and all those things.

But, I mean, it's Red Freaking Sonja.
