Tom Reilly Collection Master List

250 posts in this topic

I only have a few Reilly books in my collection and wonder who has most of the DC stuff?

Erik, I have only a few Reilly books remaining, too.

My question would be, where are all the Centaurs??

STEVE

A lot of company's seem to have disappeared based on Beerbolms extensive list. For example: To this date, no one has seen any Nedors and none have been certified. Many mainline companies, titles and key issues are no where to be seen. Makes me wonder... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I have been keeping track of SF's copies since 1991 (a 16 year endeavor) and my list is STILL under 200 books. Something is definately not right with the numbers.

Not too long ago there was a thread that had a picture of a theo holstein ad from back in the day. Half naked and reclined on a couch... wish I was joking. He had a hard on for Tough Kid Squad at the time.

This ad just kills me - It's funny on so many levels! I'd like to know if this was for real or if he was joking. From the 1976 OPG:

Wow, I guess that's a guy you'd probably not forget. 893whatthe.gif I remember my uncle saying that Theo was trying to corner Action # 1 and had around ten copies at one time. He said his was a very odd rich guy... and I guess he wasn't kiddin' . 27_laughing.gif Anybody know if he is still alive?

I've got a copy reserved already with Mr. Nelson. In the meantime, how about you posting some Marvel Mystery pedigree books in my new thread? You CAN still do that even though you're a grader right? Pleeeaaassseee??? poke2.gif

Chica bow bow music starts playing in my head when I see this ad. Eeewh! Kind of makes me a little sick! Who in earth would advertise in a Euro suit to buy and sell comics. Is he a 70's porn star, or comics guy? I would bet money he drove a corvette, not that there is anything wrong with that. I am sure he thought he was soooo cooool, in today's world not so cool! He looks like the kinda of guy who would give your mom the clap and brag about it. (just kidding) Too funny of an ad! 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

Thanks for posting the ad.

I wanted everyone to see it with their own two eyes before seeing why $1500 from Holstein might have been turned down in favor of $1000 from someone else from someone else for that Action 1 copy, as mentioned earlier in the thread. He obviously had a bit of a different personality and probably rubbed a few people the wrong way back then. Anyone who says "I consider my comic-library to be the world's most valuable collection" has got to be kind of a pain in the asz, let's face it.

What I like about the ad is it shows how comics back then were kind of the "wild west"... ie the quote: "the seller is usually unaware of their potential value", the valuations that by today's values are nuts (MMC2 same as Marvel 1!). Some of the non-comic stuff I collect is like that also. Everyone's just making up the rules as they go along...

I don't think I'd want Theo to rub me in any way - right or wrong. tongue.gif

I love how you can buy either Superman 1 or Cap 1 for $1500, but it will take $2000 to get him him to part with his Tough Kid Squad. screwy.gif Surely that was odd (and creepy) even in 1976.

Personally I doubt it was that strange. Comic guides were still new, and people were as I said making up the values as they went just based on what they liked. Someone who liked sandman better than superman might have been offering more for an Adventure 40 than for Action 1. It's anachronistic to look at it with today's eyes, although I wasn't there so I'm just guessing based on my experiences collecting video games - which is also a new hobby/ wild west/ no price guide type of deal.

To me this collection has been a mystery- "more mystery than real". I have a couple, but they seem to have been dispersed without any good paper trail. They appear to be relatively hard to identify and one would think with all the Church books and other pedigrees for sale over the last few years that several would have surfaced. Have they just been dispersed so that they are anonymous books in the comicbook population? After all with several highgrade "non-named pedigrees out there", those owners and those books are also anonymous.

I got it thanks! I posted this before but anyone who has an authentic SF/Reilly book that is not already CGC graded please let me know (via PM if need be)so I can add it to the list of confirmed copies. All entries will be kept confidential! Thanks!

Great info Bob. I just got here and see that it's been a while since people have posted anything new. I would love to keep this discussion going, as this collection is my favorite pedigree. I have a quick question as well. Can you remember the extent of Bob Selvig's involvement with the books (maybe roughly how many he got) and what particular publishers were included in his batch? I've heard he's completely out of comics now, has been for a long time, and has no interest in discussing them. You are likely our only source to shed light here. Thanks in advance for your reply!!! hail.gif

OK, just noticed this thread has been dusted off and some one is polishing it with Theo Pics from his earlier adverts - pretty scary stuff, if you ask me - Theo was the last San Dee Funny Book Asylum Gathering - he looks way old now, unlike me

Dunno if i already answered this query, but here is another shot at it anyway

Bob Selvig, along with David Belmont, got into the first third of the collection. He and David were pugnatious in their determination to acquire some of the books at the time. They had to wait in Berkeley for several days for the doctor to get back with us after i handed the doc a 1972 price guide, as the 73 guide was not yet out.

I called Bob at his place of employment a couple times some years ago up in Minneapolis, and he just does not want to talk about his comic book days - at all. I think his time in southern Calif burned him out in more ways than one, most likely

There were no lists made up at the time, but picture a large pallet with boxes covering its entirety - that was the first third of this legend

Robert,

Do you know what happened to the MLJ stuff? Specifically, Pep Comics 22-36 and Archie 1-10?

I would love to buy one of those books!

The books were scattered to the winds of collectordom - keeping in mind that Archie stuff was akin to dirt back then (sigh)

I can understand your frustration - as well as the multitude of other people who contacted me over the years. The story is just as i have related it over the decades now.

Most of the books DID NOT have the Reilly Stamp on the back cover

That is a fact

Since Mr ZD surfaced here as an example, picture a lot of other collections which also languish unknown to the investor collector crowd

I bought a large collection in 2000

it had a complete run of Star Spangled, Smash 18-85, Top Notch 27-40 or so (just Web issues)

two of the Spangleds were Reilly copies

a dozen Smash and a few Top Notch were Mile High

this guy had stopped collecting in 1980, just after Chuck had put that huge advert in TBG offering most of the collection for sale

There are a LOT of other guys like this still in the woodworks, not coming out to play or show & tell

best
