Ebay Global Shipping Service?? WTF is that??

118 posts in this topic

Every time I sell to a buyer using the GSP, Ebay shows me a prompt screen stating that the buyer has paid and will be using the GSP. (shrug)

Hi, I'm an uniformed EBAY seller who pays little attention to where my packages are going, and my seller preferences. Additionally, I'm unconcerned when my packages are found to be empty, and prefer to announce it on public internet forums and then wonder why people would ask me about it.

Listen, I printed my own shipping label and shipped to the address given to me by ebay. Been doing that for years. I just didn't understand why ebay would handle the package then ship it themselves. Yes I was uninformed that this actually happens but it sounds like a new service, Common sense would tell you that I was upset that they said the package was empty.

Did they send it back to you?

Did they say it looked like it had been it been opened and reclosed?

Or damaged so bad that the item fell out?

What do you think happened to it?

What was the item?

The empty box is the interesting part of this thread for me.

Additionally, some people might be on the fence (or just as ignorant) about ebay global shipping and wonder if the empty package has to do with ebay global shipping. Or might wonder if YOU think it does, especially since you (OP) appear not to know about it.

But you can't see why someone would infer that, so I guess those are not relevant questions.

That's exactly where I'm coming from in asking

If this was me, I'd be mad that ebay misrepresented the whole deal to me.

Made me think I was selling to a domestic buyer, rerouted my package without my knowledge, and then either lost, or stole my item, and then said it's my fault.

It's funny because if you read my initial post that's exactly what I asked.

But you didn't answer any of the questions about the package from above

OK, didn't realize ebay has it's own global shipping service. The package goes to them and then they ship it internationally apparantly. Well I got this message today..

We are contacting you regarding eBay Item #: 321724254278 which you recently sold to your buyer, gellert1112. We received your parcel at our shipping center in Erlanger, KY; however, the parcel arrived empty of the item. We are unable to ship the parcel forward because of this.

At this time we encourage you to issue a refund in full to your buyer and to contact your shipping carrier to start the shipping insurance claim process.

If you have any questions please, contact us by phone. To do this simply go to eBay.com and click on the customer support tab at the top right of the screen. Next you will click the contact us button to the right, and need to specify your concern to be routed to the proper department. You will eventually get a pin number and a phone number to call us.

We thank you for all of your eBay business and for taking care of your buyer. Its great sellers like you that make eBay the best place to buy and sell online.

Sincerely,

eBay Customer Service

The package address was KY so why would it go there and then they ship it, makes no sense. I thought the guy lived in Kentucky but turns out he is in Australia.

I missed the question in the post.

If you read the first post all it said was the package was empty and I should refund the buyer. I will follow up with them but all I was wondering was if anyone else had this happen to them. Didn't think I'd get grilled over it. I realize there are those in the world that can't contain themselves when given a chance to poke fun or put someone down .

Come on now, where did I make fun of you or put you down?

I'm asking because I want to know what is stopping someone at the shipping center from just stealing good items when they inspect packages, and then just saying they were sent empty.

That's why I wanted to know specific details about the package, so as to gain some possible insight into what may have happened to it.

I assure you from a foreign buyer‘s viewpoint, it’s useless at best, and loathsome at worst – I do not buy from sellers using it.

Same. I see a listing that uses Global Shipping, I'm out.

I recently helped a buyer, on eBay, get some of the White Dwarf magazines I have sale who lives in Australia. For me to ship all of those books would cost me a lot to ship, but with the program it didn't cost me much as I sent them Priority Mail Flat Rate Medium. The buyer was real happy with them and how much I helped him to get them by combining them into one sale, were as I usually ship singly.

Ebay has rules.

If you are too lazy to read them or just want to ignore them, then what sort of sympathy are you expecting?

What use is a forum where everyone is expected to already know everything. Cut the guy some slack.

If it was packed properly he never would have started a thread.

Trust me it was properly packaged. Ask Andy Bo Bo he got the same package this week from me from the Stormsurge thread. Unless the priority mail box fell apart on it's own, I guess anythings possible.

I think most people are just jumping on you because you didn't state in the very 1st post that you didn't send an empty package but it arrived empty.

I know you think people should assume that you sent a proper packaged, but you know how internet discussions go.

If it was insured you should probably looking for insurance restitution (if it's worth your time).

If you didn't know about the GSP, most people have hated dealing with it and avoid it whenever possible.

I use GSP for two reasons:

1. There are many people who won't ship overseas. Obvious by this thread. That's makes completion smaller and this people will pay a premium, more or less, for a book.

2. All I am required to do is get it to Kentucky. I have been told ebay opens the package and repackages it in their packaging. I don't have proof one way or the other, but I always ship in a cardboard box or mailer. Doesn't cost me much and haven't had any comaints, yet.

Not sure why you would not buy from someone because they have GSP listed? I have had international people message me and ask if I can ship it otherwise and say yes, it will cost X amount.

I've never had any problems with GS

I realize it's expensive for the buyer but if they're ok with that I'm ok with it

You're not sure because you don't see the outrageous customs fees listed in addition to the shipping cost.

Sample:

New Mutants 98 CGC 9.8

Price: $899.99

Shipping to Canada: $31.89 (not too bad)

IMPORT FEES: $128.98

You're right that people will pay a premium for your books... With GSP, though, you're mistaken if you think they're paying it to you.

The premium is being paid to ebay, not to you, in the form of a cash fee for imaginary import fees. The $30 charge (or whatever amount it is) comes right out of your pocket... If you just shipped the book to another country yourself for the exact same total price - which the buyer has already agreed to pay - you'd be making more money.

As this thread shows, lots of people will avoid your listing, and that likely lowers your sale price. Then ebay takes a big cut of the total sale price from you for no apparent reason. Finally, someone (apparently) unpackages and repackages your item risking damage or (as with the OP) total loss...

Sounds like a great system...

Now, maybe it protects you from evil international scam artists... But judging from a lot of banning/shaming/blocking threads on these boards, you're just as likely to find these in the U S of A as anywhere else...
