jimjum12
As much as I totally love Vince Colletta's Atlas work, the D.C Romance line had such a slick, sophisticated approach.... almost from it's inception. I never thought I'd see the day that I would be publicly discussing "Heart Throbs" with a straight face. I'll probably have rotten tomatoes hurled at me for saying this, but I wonder if the Bronze Age began in the D.C. Romance line? Can you pick a book where you can say here romance BA begins? And for the sake of discussion, include Charlton in the mix

Can you pick a book where you can say here romance BA begins? And for the sake of discussion, include Charlton in the mix I'm not sharp enough to wager that one. I know a lot about them but far short of 100%. Many of them I've never seen. Especially with Charlton. With Colletta moving from Atlas, the Charlton of the late 50's through the 60's, line has got to be one of the unheralded gems of the Hobby. When Romita, for example, moved to Marvel, his style, to me, was full of the seeds of the Bronze Age. I got lucky and was offered a collection of early 50's to mid 60's romance books with an emphasis on D.C. .... as much as we like to fuss about who created what, but Comics have long pulled their inspiration from popular media. By the time the Bronze Age came around, television was a source of inspiration. I watched a lot of TV in the 60's and the "tone" started maturing, to, me, in the mid to late 60's. The Wild Wild West was a good litmus point for what I describe. It ran from 1965 to 1969. Below are a few DC Romancers that seem to be, arguably, trendsetting. Popular Post Dr. Love
If BA is said to begin more or less with Green Lantern 76 in 4/70, and seen as offering darker, more realistic story lines that were socially relevant - romance couldn't really jive with the new direction to a large degree. To the extent it could, it was through the representation of interracial romance. DC romance was right there with that. Lois Lane 106 11/70 "I Am Curious (Black)!" set the tone and the newly appointed romance editor for DC, Dorothy Woolfolk, got the memo with Young Romance 171 4/71 and Young Love 87 7/71. southern cross, Yorick, Inaflash and 5 others 7
Popular Post jimjum12
Here's some samples that are better than what I provided earlier, Romance books that seem to be moving, stylistically and thematically beyond the Silver Age, even though they are published between 1965 and 1968, still squarely in the Silver Age. The concensus amongst people I knew was that gals matured earlier than the fellas, maybe DC was trying to accomodate that. By 1969 the SA spirit had basically been paved over in the Romance genre. That is a tough one. I’ve been looking for years, and me best is still a VG. Maybe VG+. Yours presents very nicely. I see four copies on eBay and the best is VG. Popular Post N e r V
So my first 7 copies from the Fantast collection are arriving soon from CGC. 5 were graded as expected but 2 of them took some serious drops that I’ll note when posting. First up Secret Hearts #113. This one was spot on with grade from raw to CGC. Only difference was seller had white pages and this got OW/W which honestly happens a lot with dealers vs CGC opinions on PQ. Great Gene Colan cover IMO. Popular Post N e r V
Book number 2 Falling in Love #83 from the Fantast collection. Purchased as a raw 8.0 OW/W and that’s exactly what CGC gave it. Killer Tony Abruzzo cover.
