Nintendo/Playstation prototype discovered!?

17 posts in this topic

The story I've always know was Sony was brought in to make a CD add on to the SNES, not the console itself.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNES-CD

Interesting article... It also linked over to the 64DD:

I'd never heard of this system either. Pretty incredible how many failed systems Nintendo has had over the years.

It is fake for the following reasons:

  • The production branding (only marketing prototypes have branding).
  • The contracts were not between the American divisions of Sony/Nintendo and all the items are for the American electronical grid.
  • As stated above Sony Japan was contracted to create a CD device (internals)

This would have been a product for the super famicom and Sony would not have had their name on it let alone molded into plastic. Their is just to much wrong with this for it to be a prototype, unfortunately even marketing prototypes do not look this good.

Edit: just noticed it actually says "playstation" on the top, this word wasn't even invented yet by sony when all this was going on.

That's what was bugging me as well, Sony wouldn't have put their console name on anything, even if it existed at the time.

Nope, you need to learn a lot about the video game landscape from that time. That IS the Sony Nintendo Playstation. There was to be TWO devices made by Sony at the time frame. One was an add on for the SNES (similar to the N64DD was made in Japan) and the second was a stand alone device called the "Playstation" which would be a Disk based system that also would play SNES cartridges. The rights were such that Nintendo would make money off of the sale of cartridges but Sony would make money off of all the disk sales (a HUGELY lucrative deal for them, I can go into the reasons why if you'd like) Then at CES Sony announced the device, everyone freaked out (in a good way) and then 24 hours later Nintendo announced the Philips CD-I (which turned into a huge failure) which was a deal structured more toward nintendo (Nintendo got most of the money from the sale of disks for that system) and the rest is history. That prototype looks pretty damn real to me.

Interesting, I only knew about the add on. Thanks Jaybuck.
