What is the greatest single issue you've ever read?

Another great stand alone issue: Daredevil #191

I hoard copies 191. Great finish to Miller's first run on DD.

My greatest single issue is a more modern issue. I've never really cared for Superman, but All-Star Superman 6 made me cry:

This reminds me I still miss All-Star Superman #1 and I never read the full series for that. I must remember to pick it.

Morrison, as eversive and rebellious as he is, can manage to pull some very touching moments. He surely touched me and my love for animals with WE3.

Ehh so many to choose from!

My short list:

Transformers #1 (first non cartoon character comic I read, the obsession started with this!)

GI Joe #21

Superman #75

Batman #497

Secret Wars (the 80s version)

Crisis on Infinite Earths (especially 7 and 8)

DD #181

Best. Comic. Ever.

But me, I'm magic!

DD 181 is my all time favorite single comic to read. Wonderfully written.

I can't think of a single comic that comes close to how good this double issue was. I wonder if there will be another superhero comic like it again.

As for ASM 121, I honestly don't understand the love. It was just a piece of junk. I thought ASM 122 was pretty awesome however.

I read 121 - 122 when I was 8 years old, the deaths of the major characters definitely had an affect on the reader. I had never read anything like it before.

I see a lot of the usual suspects- ASM #121, X-Men #137, DD #181, etc. All great comics. But for me it's Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2. Although it's part two of the story that began in Avengers Annual #7, MTIO Annual #2 is great by itself. It's the culmination of the grand, cosmic epic by Starlin.

I had stopped collecting for thirty years. When I returned, the first book I repurchased was Avengers Annual 7.

Everything a kid could want in a single shot, including a nice listing of each member's origin and abilities in the back of the book

Greatest single issue for me is unquestionably Daredevil #181 ("Last Hand", featuring Bullseye vs. Elektra to the death!)

Honorable mentions:

Daredevil #227 - Part 1 of Born Again. As good as this storyline was, it peaked with part I

Uncanny X-Men #137 - The Death of Phoenix

Conan the Barbarian #24 - The Song of Red Sonja

Amazing Spider-Man #121 - The Death of Gwen Stacy

Amazing Spider-Man #98 - Conclusion of the drug storyline

G.I. Joe #21 - Silent Interlude, 1st Storm Shadow

Judge Dredd (Eagle) #22 - the pinnacle of The Apocalypse War saga - "For Freedom! For Justice! For Mega-City One!"

It's a three way tie between The Killing Joke, Batman 251, and ASM 121. Plus any of the EC Shock Suspenstories with a Wally Wood "preachie" could easily be the best comic I've ever read. There are too many to choose from.

Uncanny X-Men #137 - The Death of Phoenix

I had to go with this issue because I am an old X-men fan, but also for this.

Several issues later in the letters columns there was a tearful letter from a sister I think about how the death had crushed her younger sister. This is all from memory I will have to back and find the letter now to make sure I am right.
