Point Five
(Cross posted from my comic journal) My WDC&S 1 - 100 collection passed a significant milestone this week. I picked up a couple of 1945 issues, which filled in my 'second half of the century'. I now have the run from 49 -100. Of course, that's the easy part. I'm now 68/100, which means that I have only 16 of the first 48. Here are the issues 49 - 100. (Clickable thumbnails) Awesome. So many great covers. And just look at those colors! Makes me want to get back to duck collecting. I was chipping away at the WDCS #1-50 run, but stalled out and started chasing other shiny objects. Just too much GA greatness to choose from. Badger
Wow, color me jealous! Fantastic books! I've always played around wit the idea of doing the same run but to many dreams not enough money. Numbers 69 and 98 are probably my favorites of what you show. The 69 is just an awesome cover and the 98 has the first appearance of Uncle Scrooge in WDC&S. Sqeggs
I always thought that #49-#156 books had the best stories. You could watch Barks develop his style, in writing and drawing, and become the genius that we all love. Your books look like the perfect kind of run--beautiful and yet they could be read. Congratulations! Great achievement AJD! I would agree with YK's assessment of Barks's best period ... although without looking through the books again, he may be stopping a little early on the back end. vaillant
@AJD: Beautiful! I have a few pre-1945 issues still coming my way, which I will show when they arrive. (thumbs u My goal would be to put together a run with the military insignas and/or the Mickey Mouse WW2 story, without spending much…

tb
You have some nice books, Ltpink. I've always found the zombie in this story one of the weirdest, un-Disneylike characters, Barks ever came up with. In an interview, he brought up the horror movie as his inspiration. The scene, Barks mentioned, starts around 12:10 and it is easy to see the resemblance to his character, both in terms of appearance and personality. Given the recent popularity of "Walking Dead" etc., I find it impressive that Barks saw the humoristic potential of zombies back in 1949.
AJD
Nice tb - I really like the offbeat FC238 story. And thanks everyone for the comments on my WDC&S collection. it's interesting to go back to earlier posts from March 2010 onwards to see my new run start to come together. It's been a bit harder than I thought to get a solid mid-grade run assembled. I suspect it's relatively easy in low grade, but waiting for the 'right' copy can take a while. Back on 1 June 2012 I said: When I set out to do this I thought it would be a $25k five year undertaking. So far it's been $4,671 in two years and four months and I'm averaging costs of 58% of guide by being patient. I think my estimates are looking good at this point, but we'll see. Since then I've bought some more early books and had a pay a bit more to fill gaps. The statistics are now 4 years and 7 months gone, and only 68/100 books acquired - so five years isn't going to cut it unless something extraordinary happens. The main culprit has been the siren call of other GA books (ECs, Fiction House, war bonds covers...) As for costs, so far it's a touch under $6k but now about 64% of guide on average. I still really love these books, so let's see what happens in the next five years... First stop, I think, will be to fill in the six books in the 40s I need and/or the two books required to have the 20s covered (21 and 23 if anyone has one to sell). tb
Great to see your turtle racing along, AJD. I am still working on 1-31 and am probably also around 2/3 done, but that has taken 15 years so far. Like you, I could probably have completed the run by now if I had been willing to pay higher prices, but that wouldn't have been as much fun and the eventual outcome will be the same. The issues between 10 and 20 have been the most elusive for me. I hope you'll be able to get good deals on those, but 5 years sounds ambitious. Like the Soviet Union, I plan for success but reality often looks a bit different! The Soviet Union? Those Marxist-Leninist revisionaries? No, comrade AJD, if we are to achieve the collectingve goals of the Party and the People the true socialist model that must be followed is that of the People's Republic of China. Like Chairman Mao's first Five Year Plan yours had noble intentions but was undermined by saboteurs, the bourgeois and, worst of all, people who refused to sell you the books you wanted at a reasonable price. Follow Chairman Mao's template and make this next step the "Great Leap Forward", a Five Year Program that will steady the course of this noble quest. This Great Leap Forward will require some sacrifice by others - specifically other collectors - but that is of little significance when one considers the truly altruistic challenge of completing your run. Chairman AJD, with your firm hand at the helm of this enterprise, failure is unthinkable. However, there are counter-revolutionaries everywhere and they should be reminded that the next step in this quest may have even more dire consequences - the Cultural Revolution. Personally, I would enjoy this "last resort" step, as I would relish the opportunity to assemble cadres of collectors (more Junior Woodchucks than Red Guards), all with the single minded purpose of securing your Walt Disney's Comics and Stories - at a reasonable price, including shipping. Solidarity Forever!! Comrade Duffman

AJD
I really like the cover of Four Color 291 as well. The green shade is really attractive on a well preserved copy. But I'm pretty sure that isn't a Barks cover. Doesn't look at all like his Donald to me.
