tth2
I actually think Kelly is a better Duck cover artist than Barks, but Barks is without a doubt the best storyteller of the clan. Gotta strongly disagree with you here. Many of the best and most iconic Duck covers are by Barks, such as FC 199 and FC 386.

Bronty
I actually think Kelly is a better Duck cover artist than Barks, but Barks is without a doubt the best storyteller of the clan. Gotta strongly disagree with you here. Many of the best and most iconic Duck covers are by Barks, such as FC 199 and FC 386. I agree with you, but I *think* what shiv is getting at is that barks may have had to work harder at it, 'pretty' art may have come a little less naturally to him, whereas Barks creating art that told a story was like a duck to water Barks' gag covers are really the only part of his body of work that we can look at without considering story (to barks' everlasting credit mind you, since his art helped drive the story, and since the two were fused together so strongly as to be inseparable). Taken on that basis only, kelly's best covers are as good as barks' gag covers. But its impossible to look at what I called the 'associative' covers above, like the US 386 cover and not love them not only on their own merits but also because of the gem of a story one knows is inside. Its telling to me that the first covers you thought of were 199 and 386 (ie one shot associative covers and not gag covers). Its not like the associative covers are necessarily 'better' than the gag covers in a pure art sense, but boy how could anyone not love those one shot covers for the memories alone. So in any kind of 'fair' comparison of kelly to barks (in terms of pure artistic ability and nothing else) I think we'd have to compare gag covers only. The stories we all love get in the way otherwise. For example I'd take the kelly #69 http://www.comics.org/details.lasso?id=5161 over barks 108 (below) any day. But barks is the greatest comic book artist/writer that ever lived. Kelly is a nice footnote. http://www.comics.org/details.lasso?id=7818
shiverbones
Very Well put, thanks! Yes that is exactly what I was getting at. Among my favorite duck covers of all time are Many of the earlier Kelly WDC&S covers. There is a more unexpected compositional element, An unmatched humorous quality and inking finese that is second to none. Of course Barks has done Masterful covers as well, but almost all of them are broken down into an "x" composition, and it sometimes looks like Barks struggles with inking a larger image. A good example would be the ink lines on the canoe on "Luck of the North" vs. the simple yet completely assured lines on one of the following WDC&S. Of course, you have to understand I love Barks covers as well, and consider them both masters.

tth2
Has anyone seen the Ducks (and Ducks, and Ducks, and even more Ducks) in the preview for the February Heritage auction? I just went through last night and was absolutely staggered by the sheer volume and quantity. I swear you could just about put together a complete run of WDC&S in 9.0 or better, with LOTS of 9.4s and higher, from just this auction if you had the wherewithal to win everything. And there's the rub, because there's actually TOO much in my opinion. If this is all coming from Geppi, is he really hurting this bad, and will selling this level of book (as opposed to a few mega-keys) really help him out that much? Because methinks whoever owns these books is doing his best to kill the golden duck by flooding the market with too much all at once, particularly with a Euro well off its highs from last year. I just can't believe that prices won't be hit badly, particularly compared to some of the record prices paid for ultra-HG early WDC&Ss over the last few years. Since I'd already sold all of my Ducks with 2 notable exceptions, I wouldn't mind seeing prices go down, particularly if some bargains can be had, but I don't want to see the market completely tank either. shiverbones
It's never a good strategy to make what you have appear common in my eyes. Maybe the seller needs to do this for whatever reason to get quick cash, but not smart. Any midgrades that may slip through the cracks while the attention is on getting HG bargains? Lots of mid-grades in the auction too. I'm used to seeing close to complete runs of Spider-Man or some such title in auctions, but not a title like WDC&S. It really is mind-blowing. ft88
After re reading the Donald Duck does ether storyline from WDCS 112 I wondered which came first, this issue or the Curious George story (see below) So was Carl Barks influenced by the Curious George story and is the CG story the first one where a ether is used like this in a kids story. I feel like there have been plenty of Disney/Warner Brothers/MGM/Hannah Barbarra cartoons with kid sniffing drug use that might predate 1947. ft88
BZ, Wikipedia shows that CG used ether in Curious George Takes a Job released in 1947 BTW it also says that Curious George Goes to the Hospital was released in 1966. This is the one where he eats a puzzle piece but doesn't actually use ether. Wiki Link

AJD
I have had one of the best weeks yet in the mailbox stakes. A 7.0 Incredible Science Fiction, three new hard to find Australian Disneys and a very (very!) nice run of Dell Pogo 1-15 I won on eBay. (I know this isn't a sales announcement thread, but if you want my 5.0-7.5 undercopies of 3, 6-8, 11-15 send me a PM and we can talk...) Here is the pick of the bunch. This Australian comic is one of the earliest reprints of US duck material. Although undated, it had to be after Sep 43 (US publication date) and before Sep-46 (when numbered and dated Australian series started). My guess is '44 or '45, because this is a very small comic - less than 5" x 7" - which suggests wartime paper shortages. I've never seen one of these pocket-sized comics up close before, let alone owned one.(I'd only seen them online, including the very good Australian Disney comic site at http://home.goulburn.net.au/~alecto/ - this one is listed under the Ayres and James issues). I've seen a couple of lowish graded copies sell on the Bay for several hundreds of dollars in the last few years. I got this very nice one, mis-described and listed on UK ebay (probably because of the sixpence 6d price) instead of Australian. It cost me $21. I'll post some other Aussie duck stuff in the next few days.
