Pages were averaging $7K this time, vs. $10K for #1 last year. The key differences being that #1 had Strange on almost every page, while #2 had much less Strange content in comparison. Also, #1 issue premium.

Regardless, I do understand that even these prices can still be shocking to anyone who doesn't actively follow his art. But it's worth noting that it may take him 10X as long to produce an issue as, say, a monthly Marvel artist. So if one of his pages gets 10X the amount of an average Marvel page, he's making about the same on art sales when factoring in time. And when you consider his page rate from Marvel is around the same, then he's making much less overall because he's producing much fewer pages.

There's also a lot less of his original art available as a result. So while I understand the initial sticker shock, it's not as shocking IMO when taking everything into account.

Transformers drop is epic. The covers by DWJ for issue 6 and 7 are mind blowers. DWJ issue 9 cover no slouch. Already gone. 8 remarqued 9.8 Transformers 1 Otley/DWJ sold out @ $500 each. No plans to do any more. Lots of terrific art by Jason Howard and Ryan Otley.

As I said in the "San Diego Comic-Con" thread, SDCC is a highlight of my year. I love this show. I love exploring the vast floor space and seeing everything that's in the room. These days, the radius I can travel extends as far as the nearest restroom from my booth. Still, this was one of the best SDCCs of the 30 or so I've attended. And I didn't go home with a single piece of art.

Each day was excellent, but two events stood out for me especially.

I host a dinner every SDCC in support of my charity, The Lu Family Fund. This year, our guest of honor was Dr. Yuman Fong. A key member of my wife's team and a giant in surgical oncology and cancer research (currently holding clinical trials for oncolytic viruses). This is how much Dr. Fong means to us: The code name for our initiative, The Second Opinion Project, is "The Dr. Fong Project". To date, we have helped 276 patients seek care with exceptional doctors who are willing to treat beyond standard of care. Doctors like Dr. Fong. A true hero to me.

I've also been trying to wrangle the artist David Choe to join us at SDCC since so many of our artists are fans. This year, he relented and came. As it turned out, Dr. Fong is also a fan, and owns David's art. He showed us a picture of it hanging on his wall. I had no idea, and Dr. Fong had no idea David would be at his table. Total serendipity.

David brought art supplies and got everyone drawing. This became the arts and crafts table with all the artists joining in. David had everyone put pen to paper with their non-dominant hand and their eyes closed. Just to see what ends up on the paper. He took what the Fongs did and turned it into his own art and presented it to them as a gift. Needless to say, they were thrilled.

I had to get a pic of this once-in-a-lifetime gathering of artist legends afterward.

The other key event for me this year was the Eisner Awards. Daniel Warren Johnson has been nominated 5 times previously. He finally won one last year for DO A POWERBOMB. He added two more nominations this year for TRANSFORMERS: Best Writer/Artist and Best Series. I truly believed that the nominations were the win. Not because he didn't deserve to win, but because I thought there was NO WAY they'd give arguably the two biggest Eisners a series can get...to a toy property comic.

I called Dan "the Greta Gerwig of comics" when he took the TRANSFORMERS gig. Well, no more, because she didn't win. Dan did. Twice:

Dan was serenaded by presenter Patton Oswalt when he got up to receive the first one. Which was so Comic-Con.

For anyone who wants to see more, I've been posting a lot of pics from the week on my IG and will continue doing so this week as well. Can't imagine any future SDCC will top this one, but my favorite thing about SDCC has always been seeing friends and hanging out. As long as they keep going, I'll keep going. Learned a lot from this experience. Biggest takeaway: Unless you know someone inside Meta who can submit an internal ticket, you're screwed. Which is what I read online when trying to deal with it myself and it proved to be true. Luckily for me, happened to have multiple ins to Meta via friends and this got resolved fairly quickly. But...why I've never put all my eggs into any one basket, especially when it comes to social media.

Ok I finally got some time to listen to this mega podcast and boy am I glad I did. It lets us get to know Mr Halperin THE key player in our hobby just a bit better. You can't listen to the podcast without really liking the personality of DWJ, what a fun and enthusiastic guy! Hearing from the gang again was a real treat although it was too short of a conversation, thanks Felix for posting another great podcast!
