The problem Disney will have going forward with the SW is simply this - there is much more competition for children/youth sci-fi entertainment now than there was in the late 70s through mid 80s. Specifically - comic book movies. Even though my kids grew up on the original trilogy, plus episodes 1-3, and the Clone Wars cartoon, they are more attached to the comic movie franchises. Basically, the Batman = Luke for their generation, Iron Man = Han Solo, and Wonder Woman = Leia (and the most recent version of Spider-Man = Jawa  ). My kids were excited to see Justice League this December, not TLJ, and they are more excited now to see Avengers 4 next year than they are to see the latest installment of Star Wars.

Producing movies that 1) do not connect with today's youth in a much more competitive market space and 2) alienate a good portion of your existing fanbase will lead to trouble for any franchise longer term. Maybe Lucas was the smart one and timed his selling of the property at the market peak?

I was taken back for a sec but I loved aspects of it. I've always wondered why we didn't see more from Leia.

Rian Johnson, the film’s writer and director, said that the idea came from LucasFilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, who remembered Luke telling Leia in Return Of The Jedi about her own Force abilities.

“She kept asking, ‘Leia’s a Skywalker, Luke gave her this speech in Jedi and told her basically, ‘You have this potential, too.’,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“It seemed to me it would be a really emotionally impactful thing to see her use it.”

He added: “I liked the idea it would be an instinctual thing. This would be more like stories you hear about parents of toddlers who get caught under cars and they get Hulk strength and lift the car up.

Yeah - 'cuz that's exactly how Yoda greeted Luke in Empire.

As I recall, he steals Luke's food, teases him and then goes home to cook dinner.

Yoda was testing Luke.

Luke was blowing off Rey.

Sorta different.

yeah I was looking around as well.

Same here, it was a "WTF is that?" moment...followed by Nervous laughter...followed by a really bad feeling overall about whomever was holding the reins.

Sweet Lord. It must have been like the blind leading the blind in these meetings....

Or, in short...

As soon as he threw the saber and starting milking teats I was waiting for it to be over

I can not stress how much I hated that.

That was the 2nd biggest F you to the fanbase....  after killing off Luke needlessly... I was annoyed by all the constant jokes too.    This is not a Marvel movie

I want the hero in the film. Who is the hero in this film? It is not easily answered, you really can't call Luke the hero, he is so "anti hero" for most of it. Rey? She doesn't do much. Other than those 2 there is no one. It just isn't much of a Star Wars movie without a defined hero within the story. We don't really see a hero until 2 hours have passed.

I want the hero. I want to see the hero use his rope and grab the princess and swing across the open chasm to get to the other side while the bad guys shoot at them.

The problem with this film is the story: it should have started with Luke being the hero, The Last Jedi.

How much more awesome would this have been for an opening scene:

Luke looks at Rey with the lightsaber in her hand. He looks at the lightsaber, then her. Then he says "I knew you would come. Lets begin your training" and as soon as he completes that sentence he uses the force and wills the lightsaber into his hand, and raises it with its light crackling. The great Star Wars music swells to a crescendo. YES! Luke is a Jedi still. The audience would cheer.

Instead he casually throws the lightsaber away, and then milks some alien for a drink. Yeah whatever, what terrible writing.

Agreed. JJ Abrams and Disney just want to shove their own creations Rey and Finn down our throats and get rid of Luke and the old cast ASAP.... However, the old cast is what we want!

Oh yeah, they want to limit R2 as much as possible. BB8 is cute and all but his actions and sounds were all R2-2.0

Speaking of merchandising...was that the only purpose of Captain Phasma? Seriously, I can’t remember anything she actually did to warrant being a major character. I’m surprised they hired the GOT female because just about any tall female could have accomplished her role, which is unfortunate.

the famous line "I've got a bad feeling about this" was not said in this film because that was me sitting with a lot of other fans saying it out loud in the theater doh!

Nobody clapped during or after the movie.

I saw TLJ on Saturday of the 1st weekend. Folks did clap and holler during the roll up of the opening plot background text, and classic Star Wars theme music. Families walked out stunned at the end of the movie looking for what was best in the movie.

It just looked daft, Leia Poppins.

  Hide contents

I remember feeling a rush of relief when she got blown out into space. My first reaction was that the rumors were not true that she lived and Luke died.

That would have been the perfect exit for Leia. Then she morphed into Mary Poppins and I started looking around me at others reaction, like WTF is happening:ohnoez:

I don't understand the reference.  Was it something about the slow motion?

You wouldn't have gotten it from Lucas, either, and in all likelihood you would have gotten MUCH less of Luke, Leia, or Han than Disney ended up giving you.  He communicated a vision in the late 70s for twelve total films, and he told Mark Hamill that he would only have a cameo in the one after Return of the Jedi that involved him passing on the mantle to the next generation of Jedi.  Who knows if he would have eventually changed it, but certainly a lot of what he had mapped out at the time did come to pass.  He definitely wasn't one to be overly-sentimental towards characters, so I'm sure that the focus would have been on the new generation.

Interestingly, he had the storyline of the prequels pretty much mapped out by 1981:

Fascinating to see that while many of the details of his prequel outline changed 17 years later, it mostly stayed the same.

Phasma did nothing at all except wear a very shiny stormtrooper outfit.

How would you like that cheese. with wine and a baguette?

Come on. That's trying way too hard to hold on to the past.  Yoda was living alone on a deserted planet and a practical joker.  Yet he was the most powerful jedi of all.  Oh and he was a puppet.  Was that enough to complain about.

What this whole thing has shown is the power of the mob.  A loud mob of nostalgic, aging people want the world THEIR way or else.  Or else we'll use our vote (pun intended) to lash out.  Meanwhile the majority just take it until it gets too painful for our tunnel vision to tolerate.  I'm there.
