Most comments and most views functions on CAF

38 posts in this topic

I now have looked up the new function under the Galleries tab. Personally I don't mind where it is placed, as so long as it is there. In fact, the new functionality is nice as it shows the images right away.

I would like to take the opportunity for a consideration on the comments. I think it is a great function, certainly it does help building a sense of community. However, I would like to see a bit more critique of the art (like highlighting a certain camera angle or an inking technique). In particular, from the more expert among the community.

If you click onto the Comicartfans logo at top left of your dashboard page it should bring you to the main page.

Still takes me to the dashboard...

Weird, but like I said, this is all I've ever known, so I haven't noticed any changes. I generally go from there to my gallery, and leave it there. I'll click on the updates periodically throughout the day.

For quite some time, I haven't bothered with "most views". It's essentially meaningless. "Most comments" is, to me, a better measure of what what's really getting attention.

I agree with those that miss having the list on the main page. It was easier to immediately see what the most viewed/commented pieces were. If I was interested, I'd click from there to view them. Frankly now, I just don't bother with it anymore.

Felix- there's a preference for setting the dashboard as your CAF homepage.

here's where it is set:

Your account and collection/edit premium preferences/dashboard preferences/replace homepage with dashboard (last choice at bottom of page)

Thank you!

Ah...so that's the homepage.

Very cool, but you know what would be cooler? If the "most comments" and "most views" were shown.

lol

For a few days now I have not been able to see the most comments and most views section on the CAF main page. Is it my browser or were they eliminated?

Carlo

I do miss the most comments and most views on the CAF main page too. It's a great way to draw attention to new and/or great pieces, and I think new pieces will get much less attention without this feature on the main page. Thus this may reduce the motivation to add new pieces, as some have already stated.

Using the link http://www.comicartfans.com/MostViews.asp new pieces can be filtered to show views from logged in users only.

If the most views and most comments section returned to the main CAF page, but now only showing results from logged in users for most views, would that not make most CAF users happy?

Best,

Rune

I think the issue is having that load on the main page makes the page slow so it doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon.

You're probably right, and I do understand that a faster page load and better search engine positioning may make it easier to attract customers and get more banner ads etc.

And better search engine positioning may be equal to more visitors to all CAF members - but I guess we don't know the impact yet? At least I have not noticed more views regarding my humble pieces, then again improved search engine positioning may take time to show effect, and may not show results seen without knowing previous website traffic statistics (I would for sure never notice if there are 10 or 20 % more visitors, but of course the CAF administrators would).

Well, I never experienced slow page load on CAF, but I do not know how many milliseconds are expected.

Basically I think it's like throwing out important values to make the ship go faster, but I like the values more than the speed :)

I hope I don't get flamed too much by writing that attention is the currency on CAF - and if changes are made that cause new high end pieces to get fewer views and less appreciation, while some unpublished semi-porn sketches get a lot more attention through Google, then I do not think CAF will profit from such changes in the long run.

Well, I've noticed a small increase in the number of daily views on my gallery. Being a premium member, I can track the daily amount of views I get and have noticed a small increase. Now, whether that is due to more traffic from this change, or some other random factors, I can't say. But I am seeing more viewing on my gallery of late. So, it might be happening.

I've said it before, but I never look at the most comments or most viewed pieces. I just check out what catches my fancy. Usually by viewing the most recent uploads over the previous 24 hours. Which usually goes by quick, since half of it is pseudo porn and cheesecake (nothing wrong with that in and of itself) by half-assed hacks. And that's what makes it easy to breeze through and pick out what is of interest.

I can understand those that don't want to see the NSFW stuff pop in the office, but then I surf CAF on my own time rather than when (ahem) I am at work, so for me it's no biggie. :)

And then the search function in my friend, as there are a dozen or so names I semi-regularly do a search on and find whatever is new by them so I can check those out. So I guess I make my own way. Never was into what the "popular" kids were doing anyway. Heh. Truthfully most of the most viewed and most commented stuff is of little interest to me, and the pieces that are mostly come up in my own searches anyhow. So I use CAF in the way that works for me, rather than have it fed to me.

I do wish there was a more effective way to weed out the amateur artist stuff though. My go-to is to customize my search for "published art" but I lose out on seeing cool commissions that way. But if I happen to do a character search... man the pap that some guys trace off of net porn and hastily scribble a costume over is... I don't get the attraction. And that's if you ae lucky. The guys that draw like an 8th grader doing porno comics for their buddies... some figure drawing classes are in order. Though something makes me think they aren't in it for the "art".

But whatever... seems to get a lot of views from somebody.

Pretty much sums up how CAF works for me.

I do both. I have my regular searches which I do regularly. I also like to see what else is garnering comments from other members. I see a lot of art that I wouldn’t otherwise and have interacted with members I wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s a great feature IMO.

Hey, what happened to the daily Highlighted art that used to be on the home page too? I don't see it and so went to a piece that was highlighted and it brought me to a page that now says "Comic Art Gems" but I don't see that section (page) in any of the dropdowns? Maybe I looked too quickly but where is it? (shrug)

That section was it. Things aren't normally highlighted on weekends, if you look at the url, it says comic art highlights even though the page says gems
