As he's done time and time before, James Gunn says there's no bad blood whatsoever between the executives of Marvel Studios and DC Films. In fact, Gunn revealed in the comments section on a recent Instagram post that he invited Marvel Studios' two head honchos to hang out on the set of The Suicide Squad to catch up. Responding to a fan's question asking the filmmaker how Marvel responded to his new gig on Squad, Gunn said any Marvel vs. DC chatter is all drummed up by the fans.

"I told Kevin Feige before I took the job and he was very cool and supportive as he always is," Gunn said. "He just wanted me to make a good movie. He and Lou D'Esposito even came to visit the set and watched us shoot. There isn't the enmity behind the scenes like there is in the fan community."

The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6, 2021 while Marvel's next movie is Black Widow, currently due out November 6th.

While Gunn and others have emphasized that the new movie is more than simply a remake of the first, in many ways it seems like a do-over. Leading cast members from the original film like Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) are all reprising their roles for The Suicide Squad. That familiar cast will be joined by new faces like Idris Elba (Bloodsport), Nathan Fillion (TDK) and John Cena (Peacemaker).

James Gunn has now released another tidbit about the upcoming film – The Suicide Squad will be rated R. It has long been speculated the movie would receive an R-rating, making it only the second R-rated movie for the DCEU after Birds of Prey. Gunn confirmed The Suicide Squad's rating on Twitter, responding to a fan’s question about the film’s rating by saying, “Yes it’s rated R.”

Joel Kinnaman is one of the few returning actors from David Ayer’s 2017 film, “Suicide Squad,” that is in the cast for James Gunn’s upcoming “The Suicide Squad.” (The ‘the’ makes all the difference, you see.) In having that rare honor, he’s able to compare and contrast the way each film was made and the extent to which Warner Bros. got involved with the features. And judging by his excitement for Gunn’s sequel/reboot/whatever it is, it’s clear Kinnaman thinks fans are going to really respond well to the new superhero team-up film.

Speaking on an upcoming episode of The Playlist Podcast (the whole interview can be heard below), Kinnaman talked about his new film “Brothers by Blood,” but also took time to talk about James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” and why he’s totally up for seeing whatever original cut of the 2017 film that David Ayer wants to finish. In fact, he’s really interested in seeing the cut Joker bits featuring Jared Leto.

“You always wanna see the filmmaker’s cut, you know?” said Kinnaman. “It’s always a shame when the filmmaker’s vision doesn’t make it to the cinema. Of course, there’s always going to be compromise. I find it’s the bigger the budget, the bigger the compromise. Usually that’s the case.”

He added, “I’m sure [Ayer’s cut] would be much more interesting. David’s take on the Joker was really interesting and that didn’t really come out in the movie that we saw.”

When he switched to talking about James Gunn’s new vision for “The Suicide Squad,” it’s clear that Kinnaman doesn’t believe that Warner Bros. will want to change much of anything before August.

“With James Gunn, it’s a whole new universe. It’s a completely different thing,” Kinnaman explained. “We kinda all just started with a blank slate…It doesn’t feel like we’re doing a sequel in any way. It’s a strange kinda middle ground of a reboot. Something in between there.”

“I don’t think [Gunn] had to compromise one iota of his vision,” he continued. “He really got to do exactly what he wanted. And it’s definitely going to be the biggest budget R-rated movie that’s ever been made. And it’s heavily R-rated and super silly. It’s really like childish, childish humor and it also finds these profound moments where you get really emotionally moved. And then it’s super violent and then it’s really silly again…Every character is just so ridiculous.”

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6th. And now we have an official synopsis! Gunn’s movie will be a not-so-traditional sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. Gunn himself has even said you don’t need to have seen that film to follow his. Regardless, several characters/actors from Ayer’s film are returning for Gunn’s movie. Such as Viola Davis Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Margot Robbie.

Here is the official synopsis:

“Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.”

It continues:

“Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.”

Director James Gunn confirms that The Suicide Squad is finished and cut, adding that he had the final cut without interference from Warner Bros.

Director James Gunn confirms that The Suicide Squad is finished and cut, adding that he had the final cut without interference from Warner Bros. The movie, currently scheduled for an August 6 release on HBO Max and in theaters, is a spiritual follow-up, though not necessarily a direct sequel, to 2016's Suicide Squad. That movie featured the likes of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang, all of whom are returning for this movie.

Directed by David Ayer, the 2016 movie was a critical failure, but a box office success, bringing in close to $750 million worldwide. A sequel was green lit, and Gunn was brought in to direct after being temporarily fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney. He added a host of cast members, including Idris Elba as Bloodshot, John Cena as Peacemaker, and Daron Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man. According to the man himself, Gunn's Suicide Squad is heavily R-rated and super silly, a tone that fits the original comics far better than Ayer's version, which was tonally inconsistent thanks to studio interference. And after teasing that he was close to finished with the movie in January, Gunn has posted an update on Twitter.

Responding to a fan question on the social media platform, Gunn confirmed that The Suicide Squad is "fully finished and cut." The question was about how much Warner Bros. interfered, with the fan concerned about the studio's infamous track record, but Gunn assured him that every single decision in the movie was his, adding that the few notes the studio gave were "good and minor." He ends by saying that the studio was "creatively amazing," showing support for them that was missing from other DC directors in the past. You can read Gunn's tweet below:
