Favourite has been the preferred spelling in British English for several centuries, but this does not mean that favorite is a late arrival to the language or even American in origin. I knew that big word and what it meant! 

I was talking with someone last night, and she didn't know a word one of the guys used, but all I could think of was yet another big word to replace it with, so I think she probably gave up at that point.

I wish I could remember the words, but I had three too many drinks last night...,
