Popular Post n2wdw
Major Grail Alert! Everyone - Thanks for your responses since my last post. I really appreciate it! Life has been busy lately. All my kids (4) are home for Thanksgiving! If you want a challenging life, try having 4 kids. Guess what? As they get older, their kid issues become adult issues. If you feel you have control over your life, try having kids, especially as they grow up. Now you know why I drink! I got a 20 lb turkey. My wife said it's too big but I like leftovers. A tradition in my family is to make cheesy mashed potatoes. This is an awesome recipe. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/baked-mashed-potatoes-with-pancetta-parmesan-cheese-and-breadcrumbs-recipe-1949314 Anyway, we move to comics. I won this on eBay a couple of weeks ago. MMC 12. This is a classic GGA cover. In my book, one of the best Dastardly GGA Bondage covers. I never thought I'd have such a nice copy. I bid on a few (more than a few) over the years but never won one. I went high this time (high for me) and was shocked to win it. There were complications as, at the time, I was in Japan. But I worked it out with the seller. This is now one of the greatest comics in my collection! Popular Post n2wdw
GA GGA Bondage - Stealing Beauty Because I'm anal, I've developed sub-categories of GGA bondage. This actually helps focus my collection, as when I consider buying something, I ask myself "what category does this fit into?" The book I recently got, that I wrote about above (MMC #12), is in the category that I call "Stealing Beauty." Other people (including CGC) call this "injury to face." But to me, that's a subset of the "stealing beauty" category. And, if you look at the cover of MMC 12 (below), it's chilling. You've got a beautiful girl, and she's about to be scarred by having an ugly, red hot mask pressed against her face. How crazy is that? There are many books that fit in this theme. Like MMC 57, with a grinder hovering over the blonde's pretty face. Again, chilling and disturbing. And here's another MMC, #83. An evil photographer about to shoot acid into the pretty girl's face. Here is one of the most classic covers, Crime Does Not Pay 24. Here, the evil man is pressing the girl's pretty face into the stove fire. Again, chilling and disturbing. Examples of this genre are best in the golden age, but you can find them in newer comics. Here are 2 from Wonder Woman. Anyway, I'd be interested if you have any other examples. Please post them here! Thanks for reading. Edited December 3, 2019 by n2wdw Hepcat, sagii, badback83 and 2 others
Popular Post n2wdw
More Lady In White Here are a few recent additions to my Lady in White collection. This is the collection of comic covers where (1) the damsel in distress is wearing a flowing white gown; (2) the cover has a gothic feel to it; and (3) the overall CGC grade for the comics in the collection is 9.0. I'm having more and more fun chasing this collection. It's opening me up to stuff I've never looked at before, like monster and horror mags and comics. I'm finding how difficult it is to fine high grade magazines. I'm having debates with myself -- fun debates -- about what qualifies for this collection. For example, consider Ghost 4. I really like the Ghost series, and this is one of my favorite covers. The question I asked myself, is this Lady In White - worthy? I finally decided no, because while the girl's dress is white, it has the green bows in the top. (It would also significantly bring down the overall grade of the collection, but I'm not too concerned about that criteria). Anyway, here are the 4 newest additions to the Lady in White collection. I'm really excited about getting HOS 94. It took me forever to find a reasonably priced copy. (Thanks @SuperBird!) I was surprised by X-men 179. I already have a raw copy in my collection. I saw this JRR SS copy while browsing and it hit me that it was a Lady In White book. Serendipity is great in collecting! Psycho and Tales of the Zombie -- I've learned that these are tough, tough mags to find in high grade. And graded copies of these mags are more expensive that I would have thought a couple years ago. I have a few raw undercopies that I'll probably keep, as I'm finding them fun to read. Here's a teaser to the part of the comic room where I keep the really good stuff: Also, something I love (almost) as much as comics is food and drink. So please indulge me as I post food pics sometimes. Here's the jalapeno margarita and enchiladas I got for lunch with the wife this weekend. Looking forward to the images of 'the nook'. Nice touch of jalapeno garnish on top of the margarita. The enchiladas look great as well. Good food, good drink and good comics. Popular Post n2wdw
Alex Schomburg I wanted to thank @jimjum12 for selling me this Schomburg rarety -- Gayety from September 1941. He posted a picture of it in one of his sale threads (although at the time it wasn't for sale). I admit I pretty much begged him to sell it to me. Jim did, and even sold to me at his cost. Thanks Jim! (Then I went through a couple of panicked weeks when I couldn't find it after he shipped it to me. Finally I found it in a large envelope along with a few signed photos. I put them there for safe keeping until I had a chance to log them into my database system, but then forgot where I put them.) Here are some other favorite Schomburg covers from my collection: And if you're wondering what signed photos were in that envelope, here's one of them -- Marcia Brady! n2wdw
Bettie Page and Dave Stevens I think I got interested in Bettie Page through Dave Stevens. I didn't know who Stevens was when I became a fan of the Rocketeer. But through that series, I came both a Stevens fan and a fan of Bettie Page, since Stevens based the Rocketeer's girlfriend -- Betty -- on Bettie page. Dave eventually found out that Bettie was still alive and he established a friendship with her, and he was a big reason for the growth in her popularity. I've accumulated a pretty nice Bettie Page collection (IMHO). I'm trying to get a copy of every Bettie Page comic. A "Bettie Page" comic is kind of hard to define. In my head it means (1) Comics with Bettie (or Betty) Page in the title, or inherent in the title (that is, titles focused on Bettie); and (2) comics with Bettie Page on the cover (like homages). I'm also trying to get a complete collection of Bettie Page trading cards, and every book focused on Bettie Page. I'm trying to get every Bettie Page statue. After that, my Bettie collection is kind of haphazard. Essentially, anything that strikes my eye, including magazines, photos, fanzines, etc. You might think the above is a lot of stuff, but it's really not. I could probably fit the entire collection on one big shelf or about 1.5 long boxes. There's really not that much on Bettie Page. Yes, there are tons of photos on eBay, but that's not my focus. Something I recently got was a bundled lot that was built around the book, "The Life of a Pin-Up Legend." The book was NM+ and signed by Bettie herself. The lot also included a pass to the book's release party. The pass was also signed by Bettie. The lot also included a signed photo of Bettie: Finally, the lot included a promo to a Bettie Page trading card set. The promo was by Dave Stevens. Unfortunately, this piece wasn't signed. One of my collecting goals is to find something that is both signed by Bettie Page and Dave Stevens. I've actually never seen anything like this, which is somewhat surprising. You'd think with their friendship, they'd be lots of double signed items. I'm not an expert on their friendship, but here's the relevant timeline: 1982: Pacific Presents #1 published; first appearance of Rocketeer and his girlfriend (Betty) who was based on Bettie Page; sometime after this publication, Dave and Bettie become friends March 2008: Dave Stevens dies December 2008: Bettie Page dies So, their friendship probably lasted many years. You'd think there would be many items signed by both of them. But I've never seen anything on eBay or anywhere else. Maybe there are people here on the boards who know more? By the way, if you're wondering if the Bettie sigs in the stuff I bought are authentic, I'm certain they are based on who I bought them from. His story backs up the sig's authenticity. Also, about a year ago, I bought this signed trading card from him. I decided to send it in for grading and authentication -- not because I doubted his word, but because I thought it would look cool. But in any case, the 3rd party authentication further assures me that all of the Bettie Page sigs are authentic. (BTW, I tried to get PSA to credit Stevens as the artist in the label, but to no avail.) Thanks for reading. Robot Man
Dave spent many years tracking down MS Page. He considered her the perfect female form. The way you feel about him is the way he felt about her. Dave was really a fan boy just as we are. I think he didn’t want to take away any fanfare from her. I have also never seen or heard of any thing co signed by the both of them.

I remember when Dave used to be at the SD con in the 90s and share a table with Jewel Shepard, a B-movie actress and former stripper who wrote a book called, "If I'm So Famous, How Come Nobody's Ever Heard Of Me". She was a hoot. She sat there and tried to give me marital advice...it didn't work... Edited December 12, 2019 by Tri-ColorBrian
