GGA, Redskins and BBQ ... Jim we have too much in common!  This weekend I'm smoking a pork shoulder on my Big Green Egg.  Nothing better than sipping a bourbon with the sweet smoke coming off the smoker.

Why I Don't Have Money for NYCC

I've tried without success to stay off the boards, to save for the New York Comicon.  But, haven't been very successful.  Here are a few of the comics I've bought lately.

One of the best things I've gotten lately is this Karate Kid photo, signed by Elisabeth Shue and Ralph Macchio:

Yeah, kids actually get more interesting as they get older (although you don't get many hugs anymore).  My 2 daughters who are going to NY are both in college. Both are into cosplay.  One, because she loves anime and likes to dress in character, and the other because she's a videographer.  They recently went to Colossalcon East and here's my daughter's video.  It's really amazing the con outside the con.  Many of these kids don't even buy a ticket.  I guess they call it lobby-conning (sorry if I sound like an old fart).  They are more than happy to go with Dad to this con, as I got them tickets.  I'm also paying for the hotel, travel to NY, and food.   They want me to take them to SDCC.  They don't understand how hard it is to get tickets.  But, if I do someday make it back to SDCC, it will be to take them.

This con was at a water park so that's why you see so much water in the video.

NY Comicon Report 2 - Terry Moore and SS versus Personalization

To prepare for New York, I'm looking through the list of artists.  I'm very impressed, and I'm especially happy to see that Terry Moore will be there.  His Strangers in Paradise is one of my all time favorite series.  I'm going to have a small stack of comics for Terry to sign.

Nowadays, whenever I get sigs I think about whether or not to submit to CGC to get a yellow label.  There's really no reason to submit if you're going to keep the comics in your collection, because you obviously know whether or not the signature is real.  Also, I think I want Terry to personalize these comics for me, and that would cut against the re-sale price.  So, I think I'll not submit these comics.  As a bonus, by not submitting, I'll save about $200 in submission fees, so that will buy a few extra comics.

Something I'll be taking to NY is this SIP museum edition.

Terry already signed it for me a few years ago at a SDCC.  But, I've been getting him to do head sketches of the SIP characters on the back.  If I'm able to catch him during a moment when he has time, I'm hoping to add David (and Freddie if I'm really lucky).  The ones I already have are Katchoo (bottom), Francine (top) and Darcy Parker (left).

Bourbon and GGA comics. We must be brothers from another mother! Although, I don't watch football. It's LA Dodger baseball all the way for me!

NY Comicon Report 3 - Gwen Stacy Commissions

Well, it's hard to think about comics today given what happened in Vegas, but I guess just as a distraction I'll post this.

I've written before how Gwen Stacy's death affected me.  I was a kid reading about Peter's romance with Gwen, buying the comics new off the spinner rack in the local drug store as the title approached #121.  At the time I was a paper boy, delivering newspapers on my bike to make money for comics.  I was going home after delivering my papers.  I had hit the drug store and was reading #121 as I slowly biked the dirt road home.  When Gwen died I was so shocked I literally fell off the bike.  I was extremely upset and 40+ years later I'm probably still not completely over it.

Many years ago I started getting commissions of Gwen.  I got out of it for a number of years, but I think maybe I might get a commission or two in NY.  Here are some I've gotten in the past.  First Billy Tucci:

Bo Hampton:

I was in about the same boat as you at the time of ASM 121..... in fact, it upset me so much I quit reading comics for several years....I just couldn't get into it after that for a long time. Nice sketches.... Gwen by Fradon is especially cool. GOD BLESS...

Here’s one of Gwen  from my friend Kin s sketchbook, he used to manage silver snail comics here in Ottawa, and had each visiting artist add a sketch to commemorate their visit to the shop, he was kind enough to let me take photos of this gem by John Romita sr

That's the best Romita Gwen bust sketch I've seen.  Beauty!

My wife and I spent $275 for lunch there with no alcohol... in 2001!

Best meal of my life though and I've been about everywhere.

I just looked at Il Mulino's menu.  I may have to go.  From my hotel (green arrow), Il Mulino (orange arrow) is close to Quality Meats (blue arrow) and only a 46 minute walk.  I love walking in cities, especially NYC.  So QM on Thursday with my 2 daughters, and then IM either Friday or Saturday.  My kids will probably dump me for their friends at least one of those nights, so if they do I'll go to IM and sit at the bar (hopefully they have a bar where you can eat).

Il Mulino is a small place and hard to get into. I would think you will be doing well to get a lunch reservation at this point.

Nice Gwen sketches! There are some artists would do a great rendition of her at the show. But none will top Romita. Here is my favorite Gwen drawing in my collection.

These were his studies before starting on ASM.

What are your thoughts on Gwen being brought back as Spider Gwen?

I also like Gil Kane, but Romita is the best.  Your drawing is really amazing.  An early study of Gwen without the headband.  When/how did you get it?

The only original sketch of Gwen by John Romita I have is this one, that I got in 2001 at a Megacon.  He was sharing a table with his son, JR Jr.  To get a sketch from each, you had to get in senior's line, and then Jr.'s line.  But the lines were short back then and the whole process took maybe 30 minutes.

For the life of me, I have no clue why I had them sketch on a Witchblade cover.  That's probably one of the worse decisions of my collecting life.  At the time -- and I still do this -- I have artists sketch on the Gen13 "do-it" blank cover.  In my view that comic started the sketch cover "thing," and I have a pretty big collection of Gen13s, even one of Batman by Carmine Infantino (pic below).

Anyway though, I don't know why I had them sketch on this Witchblade cover.  But I still like it, the way an older Gwen by senior is looking down at a younger Gwen by Jr.

I have not gotten into Spider-Gwen.  I don't like the premise of Peter dying.  It would have been more interesting (for me at least) if Peter was still alive with Gwen being a super-hero.  I do collect Spider-Gwen though, for the cover art.  Here are a few from my collection.

I'm not sure you picked the best route.  10th Avenue isn't very scenic -- to say the least! Maybe walk down to 5th Avenue and then uptown.  Takes you by Bryant Park, the 5th Avenue shops, and Rockefeller Center.

Walking in Manhattan, the uptown blocks are short and sweet, but the cross-town blocks are killers.
