Conan License To Move On From Marvel Comics

Quote

It was a note to a fan page on Facebook that did it, with a well-connected fan pointing to an upcoming Conan cover by Esad Ribic as his last, as Marvel no longer own the rights to the character. So, at Lake Como Comic Art Festival, I did a little digging.

The trademark for the name Conan and the names of Robert E. Howard's other principal characters, is maintained by Conan Properties International and licensed to Cabinet Entertainment. Both companies are controlled by CEO Fredrik Malmberg., previously co-founder of Swedish role-playing game publishing house Target Games and CEO of Paradox Entertainment. They also own rights to Bran Mak Morn, Kull, Solomon Kane, Mutant, Mutant Chronicles, Warzone, Kult, and Chronopia.

Bleeding Cool understands that this company, or new owners, now wish to publish Conan comic books themselves. And so won't be renewing the Marvel Comics license. I understand however that this will not affect Conan backstock of collections and omnibuses which Marvel will continue to publish. And that they could even use the Conan character in continuing Savage Avengers comic books. That will have to be seen. But for ongoing Marvel Conan series? King Conan #5 is published by Marvel on the 1st of June, and #6 on the 6th of July and that may be your lot.

If not for King Conan living in development hell we could have gotten that a long time ago. Arnold even noted how much he wanted to reprise the role.

Bummer!

Any news on this the show?

Just saw this. Sorry.

Other than fans chatting about it on Reddit why there has been no new details, I haven't heard a thing.

What happened to the Conan Netflix show?

With the subscriber loss and financial worries, I hope this show didn't become a victim of timing.

Warner Bros. later acquired the rights to the Conan the Barbarian character and spent years attempting to develop a remake, only for Nu Image/Millennium Films to later acquire the rights and partner with Lionsgate to produce it. Having endured a variety of directors and writers coming and going on the project, the Conan the Barbarian remake began moving forward with Marcus Nispel in the director's chair and Jason Momoa attached for the titular role. Hitting theaters in mid-2011, Momoa's Conan the Barbarian debuted to mostly negative reviews from critics and audiences alike and was a box office bomb, scrapping plans for a follow-up and now one of the stars at the center of the project is getting honest about the film.

In a recent cover feature with GQ, Jason Momoa reflected on some of his lesser-received films from early in his acting career. Momoa specifically looked towards his time on the Conan the Barbarian remake, praising his experiencing filming it but criticizing how it was changed in the editing process. See what Momoa said below:

“I’ve been a part of a lot of things that really sucked, and movies where it’s out of your hands. Conan [the Barbarian] was one of them. It’s one of the best experiences I had and it [was] taken over and turned into a big pile of mess.”

I think basically that it’s a bad idea to remake older movies that still hold up in modern day. 2c

I tend to agree but with exceptions. Remaking Conan with Arnold still around and not doing a King Conan movie is a cardinal sin in my book. Once he is too old to do a King Conan movie I would be OK with them doing a new Conan movie franchise with the caveat that its good (they'll screw it up though) and holds true to the character of the Conan character i.e. hyper-masculine

Side note, the actor that player Reacher in the Amazon series I think would make an excellent Conan as long as he wasn't blond!

Supposedly this originally was going to be produced by Amazon Prime before the 2020 move to Netflix.

New Report Claims Prime Video Abandoned A Conan The Barbarian TV Series Because Of “Toxic Masculinity”

A Conan the Barbarian TV series was announced by Deadline back in 2018. In the initial announcement it was revealed that current House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal was behind the series. He was also joined by House of the Dragon showrunner and Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik.

They detailed the series would retell Conan’s origins as he is “driven out of his tribal homelands [and] wanders the mysterious and treacherous world of civilization where he searches for purpose in a place that rejects him as a mindless savage.”

The report also specifically noted that this Conan the Barbarian series would be part of Jeff Bezos and Prime Video’s answer to Game of Thrones with Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva writing, “The project falls into Amazon’s push into big, fantasy/genre drama series with broad appeal in the mold of Game of Thrones.”

The Conan the Barbarian series never come to fruition at Amazon and in 2020 producer Frederik Malmberg moved the project to Netflix where he’s working on both live-action and animated adaptations of the character.

A little over a year ago Malmberg indicated they had moved forward in the production of the live-action series and had begun writing the series.

Malmberg explained, “With Conan, I’m happy to say that we are writing. We are in development, which means we basically work with a writer, who has written the first draft of the pilot of the series, and then a season overview. So, we are working together with the Netflix team. Obviously, with COVID, it’s been a little tricky because everybody’s working from home. It’s all Zoom conferences and very difficult to get everyone aligned. So, things are progressing, but as always you want them to progress faster than they do, but that’s the world they live in. But things are going well,” he added.

It would be nice if we could file class action lawsuits against Corporations that make claims and then disappoint. They might then have more incentive to follow through. GOD BLESS....
