They never promised them a rose garden.

Well, looks like a drop of 36% on this Promise copy here which is running a bit higher than the -24% that @MasterChief was showing in his most recent November 2023 month end update for the Promise Collection resales.  :tonofbricks:

I never could figure out how a non-war cover got that price in the first place

Definitely one of the "goofier" covers

Oh, come on you two.................It's not REALLYT that bad of a cover as it is a si-fi theme cover with aliens, even though they do look a bit like the Great Gazoo from the Flintstones.  lol

Holy mackerel. That is definitely a case of someone buying the grade, not the book. I cannot believe CGC gave that book a 5.5. It should've been a 3.5 at best.

It seems like grades have softened up across the board at CGC since Blackstone took over.

Considering who the consignor was, I totally agree with you and can't believe that book only managed to get a CGC 5.5 grade.  :whatthe:

I guess CGC must have heard all of the complaints from the boardies here about preferential grading for certain clients because that is a big drop from the CGC 8's and 9's that we are used to seeing when it comes to "production" mouse chews:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Superhero, Sub-Mariner Comics #23 The Promise Collection Pedigree (Timely, 1947) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages....

Par for the course for the Promise books.

However, I need to check Master Chief's list as this may be one of the first super hero Timelys to be resold.  If so, it shows that they're not immune to the standard Promise price correction either.

I saw that. Hard to have faith when you see stuff like this. No offense intended to cgc but more than ever I am looking at the book more than the grade these days.

My flow is

1.  Look at the book (some lower grade look really nice)

2.  Look at the grade (this will say how much it will cost)

3.  Look at the grader’s notes.  I am shocked at how many books I was interested in that had popped staples.  Recent example was the last round out Adventure Sandman cover books.

I’d say the grading is arbitrary and capricious but that doesn’t jibe when your books are always the bridesmaids?

Post WWII Timely's need to have something extra going on with the cover.  Being drawn by Schomburg is not enough by itself.

Even more so with post WWII Nedors. The non WWII Schomburg “crime” covers have a lot less interest to me and I only pick them up when cheap. They pick back up with the Xela covers though.

Could this be the result of an incompetent and bad pressing job by the newbie boys over at CCS now that the Master himself is no longer doing the actual pressing work since he has moved onwards and upwards to greener pastures?  ???

Having the same grade on both those books based on the covers has got to have broken several state laws and a couple of federal ones as well.

Well, not really. The labels are a different color. Not that I could justify even the purple one. Considering, you could buy a house in many parts of the country, a few nice vintage muscle cars or a year's travel all over the world... It's all perspective I guess...
