I missed out on a Sub-Mariner 22 9.8 and settled for this 9.6 😜 But honestly even the 9.6 doesn’t show up often.

The storyline in Doctor Strange 183 is continued in Sub-Mariner 22, and then continued again in Incredible Hulk 126. This three part story arc eventually leads to the formation of The Defenders.

Now, I’m on the hunt for Hulk 126 in 9.8 👀.

Sort of a pre-code vibe to the cover

Prices are down, and I was able to upgrade to this Tomb of Dracula 44 9.8.

Hoping to see more high grade Doctor Strange copies show up. I don’t mind upgrading, but it would be great to see some of those last few issues that I don’t already have 😁.

Love that cover. Is that the 1st meeting between blade and Dr. Strange ?

Now the search continues for the last two (in 9.6 or 9.8): 172 and 177!!

Those are tough issues.  For the 177, even the Pacific Coast copy was only a 9.4.

Yeah, it looks like there are only 7 9.6s in the census for #177.  The good news is that there are twice as many of #172.  :)

As it happens, I am also putting together a 9.6 set, and I'm still looking for #172 and #177 as well, along with #181 (17 in the census), 182 (19), and 183 (13).  When I set out on this quest, I obviously underestimated how long it would take to complete my upgrades ... I would never have guessed that Silver Surfer #1-18 would be (by far) the easiest of these short 1968 series to complete.  (In addition to those five issues of Doctor Strange, I'm also still searching in vain for Nick Fury #10 and #18.)

One of my all time favourite books.   I always keep and eye for issues, and look for more copies, and prices across all grades are strong for some reason.

The Pacific Coast copy is amazing, but the Sasha News copy beats it.

Both.

I can't recall buying the Suscha News copy, but GPA says 2011, and it's a Pedigree comics stickered bag.    I use to have most of the Pacific Coast Doctor Strange books, but in the early 2,000's it didn't really stand out, the pedigree was readily available at auctions across so many titles.   And I only ever had 2 of the Western Penn #169 books (it looks like there's 4 copies).  Those were hard to wrestle from collections.

PC's White Mountains, and Susha News offer complete runs.  Northland would in there too, but most look like they missed the pedigree notation as part of the collection.

The Suscha News collection, to the best of my knowledge, is predominantly a late SA plus BA collection, with only scattered SA books from before 1969.  The Northland collection had a full run of Strange Tales superhero books, but some issues weren't in the NM and above grade range, and with the collection having been sold by Motor City Comics in the mid '90s before CGC existed, some possibly never got slabbed and others never attributed.

Here are issues featuring Dr. Strange that I once owned:

Another Doctor Strange for the personal collection. I was surprised at the price on this one for a higher grade 1974 book (a tad less than $300). I love the cover!!

Those are surprisingly not outrageously expensive.  I just looked and the low sale for a 9.6 for this year on GPA was $204.  I bought a 9.2 a couple of months ago because I liked the cover, too. :D

I like this book too ... but it's Exhibit B for why I was making fun of Gil Kane's Hulk hair over in the Gil Kane thread.

Here is Exhibit A.

Hah, I have a 9.6 of that one, too, and I always laughed at the hair.  I always said "well, he's the Hulk... where's he going to get a haircut?"  It's just 70's hairstyle.  A bit off-topic, but quite possibly the most overpowered character in the Marvel Universe also had some of the worst hair/outfit - pre-retcon Beyonder.  The dude looked like David Hasselhoff escaped a disco dance floor in some of the comics he was in.
