Top-20 Timely Books
1 1

41 posts in this topic

Hi guys,

I was wondering what guys consider to be the top Timely books?

For many, Marvel #1 and Cap #1 would be the Top-2.

After that, Cap #3, Marvel #9, Cap #2, Marvel #4, Sub-Mariner #1, Human Torch #2 (#1) all come to mind.

I’d be interested in seeing how others rank them.

Here's my somewhat biased top 20 (give or take) in alphabetical order. I won't bother ranking them. Just know that Marvel Comics 1 is at the top of the list.

Entirely subjective, but ten of the twenty I'd include in a list of top Timely books...

All Winners 19 & 21 (first & last All Winners Squad issues, the only two)

Red Raven 1 (rare one shot S&K project)

Human Torch 5 (60 page Torch/Subby battle issue with classic Schomburg cover)

Captain America 1, 2 & 3 (origin with first Red Skull, first round shield and Schomburg Red Skull cover; S&K)

Marvel Comics 1 (origins, first Marvel comic)

Marvel Mystery 2 (first WWII nazi combat and title)

Marvel Mystery 3 (first familiar masthead, first Schomburg MM cover)

I'll add ten more in a second post. (thumbsu

OK, here’s the second ten, lots of off the wall, subjective choices in this one....

Mystic 1 (first series, pulp swipe cover by Alex Schomburg; would be swiped again by Syd Shores for Mystic 2nd series)

Mystic Vol. 2  #2 (classic Nazi giant skeletal mad Doctor harassing women on tandem slabs with hypodermic needle)

Marvel Mystery 8, 9, & 10  (Torch/Subby battle opens at the end of 7 and continues through 11 before moving over to HT Comics)

Marvel Mystery 38 (Torch battles garish underworld creatures led by robed klansman while rescuing distressed damsel dangling over acid)

Marvel Mystery 46 (colander torture themed classic cover featuring green Hitler with an ear-worm leading subterranean zombies)

Marvel Mystery 66 (final WWII issue with Imperial Japanese air force's last ditch effort to fly a death ray over NYC)

Daring Mystery 1 (Sci-fi cover with babe tied to front fender of a Newmobile; first Schomburg cover for Timely)

Captain America’s Weird Tales #74 (Cap battles the Red Skull in purgatory; devil of a series ender)

It is interesting that so many folks have USA 7 on their list, some even have USA 8, but no one has USA 6. Being the first issue in which Cap is the headliner, it should be much more significant. But as cool as the cover of #6 is, Schomburg didn't do the art so it gets overlooked on a lot of these surveys.

That because USA 7 is USA 7

I left 10 out, but I have always liked the 8-7-10 progression that their covers show. I will say that I included 3 books on my list because I felt they deserved to be on the list and not because I necessarily like them.

Schomburg drew the cover to #6, he even signed it. I get that #7 is the more iconic cover, though #6 has a prime example of one of Schomburg's elaborate torture machines on it.

He didn't do all of it. Someone obviously changed Caps head.

Good catch! I actually had to go back and look for the signature, ...but it’s there! (thumbsu

I doubt that, ...Cap usually has a mind of his own! (:

Seriously, I don’t believe Alex would have signed it unless he’d done the entire piece.  Just my opinion, given the guy’s reputation.  That said, that cover does have elements that suggest both Shores and Kirby’s influence.

Yeah, Cap's head looks more like Avison (dimpled chin, double lined cheek), but the rest looks all Schomburg ( though GCD speculates Syd Shores on inks).
