Oh wow! That's really nice. New to me.

I'm honestly afraid to even look at the romance pulps... I know it will be ridiculous how many awesome books there are. My wantlist is exploding as it is.  :fear:

Fantastic! (gonna be keeping an eye out for Seuss' Jungle Number there, too, Judge is one I always keep an eye on - usually for the girlie art)

People tend to think of the pulps as all gangsters, cowboys, and bug-eye aliens but forget Love Story and All-Story Love were top sellers in the world of pulp.  When you look at the newstand pics, you can see pretty clearly that the love pulp section is usually just as big and a lot of times bigger than the section for the boys.  It's kind of like the romance comics, though, where they haven't always been kept well, so finding them in great shape can be hard to do.  I see new ones all the time I've never seen before, sometimes with gobsmackingly beautiful art or charming love scenes.

One of my favorite blogs in all of pulp fandom is Lucynka's blog on romance pulps.  She's writes sharp, vibrant and modern takes on romance stories and authors and shares all sorts of neat peripheral articles on pulp writers from old papers and such, too:

I know several Boardies are trying to track down who this artist is, but perhaps posting in the open forum might draw in the right eyes:

Same artist's work re-used on all those Ace comic covers as posted in the OP's first posting.  Several other examples trickling in...

Bueller,  Bueller,  Bueller....

Great cover blurbs and a cool effect with the "ghost" clothing against the all red cover.  All these love pulps DM's sent me will make it to Internet Archive in due course -

All-Story Love v108n03 (1946-11.Popular).  Kind of a weird issue.  It presents very nicely for the most part but was exposed to moisture at some point (faint stain top of cover).  There's no moisture stains outside of the light ones on the cover wrap, but the whole issue is so damn wavy.   Cute one, though.

That fadeaway technique was used with great commercial success by Coles Phillips, and less famously so by other illustrators like Valentine Sandburg. Coles’ Life covers (1st series) became really hot for a spell about fifteen years ago. In his day, Phillips attained a level of success nearly equal to that of Parrish or Leyendecker. They’re definitely worth a peek. :shy:

I went digging in my own collection but don't have any of the Phillips fadeaways for Life and in fact only have a handful of any issues of that first series of Life (great mag, seems somewhat scarce, though I haven't been very dutiful in looking for it).  Here's an example of what you're talking about.  I believe this painting sold just this year but for some reason I'm not seeing a record at Heritage (but it struck me enough to grab it when it was up):

ColesPhillipsOriginalArtFadeawayGirlGoodHousekeepingCoverJune1915.thumb.jpg.06a5712b239b03dd143a7e35a48ee55c.jpg

or this one's very much in the vein that All-Story is going for:

ColesPhillips(American1880-1927).BagandBaggageLIFEMagazinecoverDecember151921OA.thumb.jpg.2b8986fc9be5d8d23cf8965ff65755ef.jpg

Looks like not much of the original art is being passed around if the record at Heritage is anything to go by.

Nice gallery here that's got a number of the fadeways you're referencing:

And it looks like there's a nice book in print completely on the subject, nice :)

Love Story Magazine 1936.jpg

A fresh new scan of this one came across the wire today (courtesy of miss Lucynka), and the scanner pointed out a later use of the Stein painting:

The scanner notes the first story after the serial was adapted to radio in the short-lived Love Story Magazine broadcast:
