815K1
Hi 👋 New guy here, so I have a little bit of this grime on a couple of comics that caught the eye of a storm.  im going to try and clean 🧽 with magic eraser. The pages are like a plasticky synthetic paper. Sorta smooth but has this grit I can feel on the cover. And there’s some brown which cold be from the water and dirt, or just dirty water.  I am not a comic restorative person I have used magic eraser before to clean marks in art gallery.  Are there any you recommend? i will attach picture of comic damage example and the type of eraser I can buy. I also have cotton tips.  Shouldn’t need a press if this works but just wondering if eraser may affect flatness, and what would be best way to place book while cleaning with eraser and tips? Doctor Dositheus
That looks like foxing, which is usuallly found on slightly older books. It's a type of mold/mildew embedded in the paper itself. Magic Eraser is probably a bad idea for that or anywhere there is color inks. Only use it on the white areas with no writing on the back and very carefully if at all (I don't recommend). Where front covers must be cleaned, a dry cleaning sponge used slowly and gently is better.

How embarassing!  I guess I rushed past that part to the pics. I still recommend the dry cleaning sponge. I've removed light residue with it. theCapraAegagrus
shadroch
I've used absorene in the past. It is good for removing surface dirt, but getting the residual absorene off the book is a pain in the . Honestly, my results with Wonder Bread were just as good, and its cheaper and easier. I bought that book and it was a waste of money. aardvark88 and Coverdeath
Popular Post joeypost
Sounds like a win. Taking a very mild abrasive to a shiny comic book cover. 815K1, Finhead, Topnotchman and 5 others 1
aardvark88
Try a brownish eraser from an art supply store. Have not tried Wonder Bread cleaning yet. 815K1
Yorick
Great book to start practicing. Anyone trying to master the art of restoration/conservation needs to start somewhere. Re-read what Joey wrote above. "Abrasive to a shiny comic book cover". Do you think that would improve the grade or just the appearance? If you're not careful, you might sand off all the colors! 815K1

Vixom
I haven't read either book. All the things they claim to teach you inside can be found on the forum for free. Most you should already know. Don't know how to create humidity? Bends dents rolls, never heard the term "pressing"? Pencil marks? I learned how to remove them sometime between preschool and first grade. I seen post in here already about how to remove dirt grime. I imagine their foxing stain fixes are a mixture of ides enes anes which will work, some better than others, but I wouldn't use them on anything I plan on keeping for awhile. I can't imagine anyone would share their organic method. I don't know what book that is but I see a barcode. I find few books with a barcode are worth disassembling and soaking. Just find a nicer book. 815K1

Arigato 815K1 Magic eraser is great for getting scuff marks off of painted walls. I've taken marker (with baking soda mixed) off a painted table. Toothpaste works, too...but I'd never use them or wonder bread or absorbene for comics. They would all leave a residue. I've used this to take dirt off back covers. You need a soft brush to take the eraser bits off, and I have used it very sparingly, once the pad is dirty, I toss it. Of course I have not used it for a few years so the price was about 1/3 of what it appears to be now. I think there was a generic brand too. https://www.amazon.com/Lineco-AX-AY-ABHI-20563-Document-Cleaning-Pad/dp/B002E4Z302/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2W6EQ78KY1R97&dchild=1&keywords=lineco+cleaning+pad&qid=1635903643&s=digital-text&sprefix=lineco+cleaning+pad%2Cdigital-text%2C79&sr=1-2 Be very careful, you could crease or tear the book. The books I've used it on were older and had very thick covers...and in dreadful minus shape, so I wasn't concerned. I'm not sure about newer books, I've only used them on GA rags. https://www.amazon.com/Lineco-AX-AY-ABHI-20563-Document-Cleaning-Pad/dp/B002E4Z302/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2W6EQ78KY1R97&dchild=1&keywords=lineco+cleaning+pad&qid=1635903643&s=digital-text&sprefix=lineco+cleaning+pad%2Cdigital-text%2C79&sr=1-2 Randall Dowling, 815K1 and greggy 1
